Josiah by name. Cyrus is the only other so foretold (177 years before). Josiah knew (2 Kings 23:17, 2 Kings 23:18). Cyrus knew (2 Chronicles 36:22, 2 Chronicles 36:23. Isaiah 44:28).

offer (in sacrifice) = slay, or slaughter. App-43.

men"s: human. Hebrew. "adam. App-14.

shall be. This was fulfilled in 2 Kings 23:16 (360 years later).

Verse 3

a sign. We have similar signs in Exodus 3:12. 2 Kings 19:29; 2 Kings 20:8. Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 8:18.

Verse 4

put forth his hand. One of the eleven rulers who thus assaulted Jehovah"s witnesses. See note on Exodus 10:28.

Verse 6

thy God. He dare not say "my God".

Verse 8

half thine house. Remembering Numbers 22:18; Numbers 24:13.

Verse 11

in Beth-el. A true prophet could not have remained there. Compare 2 Chronicles 11:16, 2 Chronicles 11:17.

and his sons. Septuagint reads "whose sons".

the words. Syriac and Vulg, read "and the words".

Verse 13

me = for me.

him = for him.

Verse 14

an oak = the oak.

Verse 17

eat no bread. To avoid what might have been offered to idols.

Verse 18

an angel spake. A solemn warning for all who listen to any revelation outside Scripture which purports to come from God, even though an "old prophet" asserts it. Compare Galatians 1:1, Galatians 1:8, Galatians 1:9. Of all such it may be said "he lied unto him".

Verse 21

disobeyed = rebelled against. The same expression used of Moses and Aaron at Meribah (Numbers 20:24; Numbers 27:14). Safety found only in the path of obedience. Compare 1 Kings 13:26.

Verse 22

sepulchre. Hebrew. keber, a burying-place.

Verse 23

to wit = that is to say.

Verse 24

a lion. For lions in Palestine see Judges 14:5. 1 Samuel 17:34. 2 Samuel 23:20. 2 Samuel 20:36.

Verse 26

disobedient, by listening to the alleged word of an angel, instead of obeying the voice of Jehovah. See note on 1 Kings 13:18.

which He spake. Compare 1 Kings 13:22.

Verse 30

grave = sepulchre. Hebrew. keber, a burying-place, a pit. Compare App-35.

Verse 31

lay my bones: i.e. lay them not with the bones of those referred to in 1 Kings 13:2. Compare 2 Kings 23:18.

Verse 32

he cried. Compare 1 Kings 13:2.

Verse 33

became one of the priests. Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulg, reads "became priest".
