The beginning of the gospel. A Hebraism. No Article. Compare Hosea 1:2, "[The] beginning of the word of Jehovah by Hosea". It is the beginning, not of the book, but of the facts of the good news. See note on Mark 8:11.

The Greek words which it represents (in this and other renderings of eutheus and euthus) are used (in Mark) twenty-six times directly of the Lord and His acts; while in Matthew they occur only five times, in Luke once, and in John twice.

driveth Him = driveth Him out. Divine supplemental information as to the character of the leading of Matthew and Luke.

tempted = being tempted. with the wild beasts. A Divine supplementary particular. Occurs only here.
