“After that, Jesus and his mother, his brothers, and his disciples… ” (John 2:12-17)
Word: After the wedding feast in Cana, Jesus went down to Capernaum with his mother, brothers, and disciples to rest for a while. Capernaum is now the stronghold of Jesus' ministry.
When Jesus went up to Jerusalem for the Passover feast, the temple incident took place. The cleansing of the temple is a major event in all the Gospels. The Synoptic Gospels record this event as taking place on the first day of the last week of Jesus' life. So, the question arises as to whether the temple event was at the beginning or the end of Jesus' ministry, or whether it happened twice. If the temple event occurred once, it is correct that it was at the end of the ministry because the Synoptic Gospels mainly record the events in the order in which they occurred.
However, John's mention of this event in the early days of Jesus' ministry must be seen to contain John's unique theology. John interprets the event of the cleansing of the temple of Jesus in relation to the overall meaning of Jesus' ministry. Therefore, it should be considered that the record was written with an emphasis on the flow of meaning rather than the chronological order. This is a summary trailer for the entire ministry of Jesus when Jesus came to this earth to correct the wrong traditions of Judaism and teach the original meaning of the temple through the cross and resurrection.
