For the work of God (Luke 22:39-46)
We often ask what God's work is. It is consistent with the mission of the church. The church has a clear mission. So, what is the mission of the church? In a word, it can be said to be the expansion of the kingdom of God. For the expansion of this kingdom of God, above all, we must experience the presence of God through worship and be filled with the Holy Spirit and be born again as disciples of Jesus. We must be holy through the Word and the Holy Spirit. It must be sanctified. That is why we must allow the light of Christ to spread throughout our homes, workplaces, society, and all over the world to the ends of the earth. This is God's will for us, the mission of our church, and God's work we must do.
The Word of God we read today teaches that ‘God’s work is to bear the cross’. How difficult this work is, he says, “it cannot be done without blood and sweat and prayer.”
In verse 42 of the text, there is a saying, “Remove this cup from me.” The cup here is the 'cup of suffering' and the 'cup of wrath'. It is the cup of suffering due to sin that you and I should drink and that all mankind should drink, and it is the cup our Lord accepts for the cup of wrath. Our Lord knows very well how great this cup of suffering is, and he earnestly prayed to Heavenly Father to take away the cup of suffering so that his sweat would fall like drops of blood. However, he concluded his prayer by saying, “Not my will, but your will,” and decided to drink the cup of suffering on the cross.
At the end of the year, if you find that you have not been able to handle the work of God that has been given to you, please pray, “Lord, send me also an angel so that I can bear the cross that was given to me. Are there any believers who are struggling and praying because they are being asked to do God's work in the next year? If so, please pray like Jesus. “Heavenly Father, not my will, but your will.” When you pray like that, I believe that God will not only give you the power to perform God's work, but also send an angel to help you.
The home and job given to me are also God-given. It's precious. However, it is a precious thing of God to serve the church, the body of Christ, to make the church healthy and to strive for the revival and growth of the church. God is now looking for workers who will carry the cross for the church. God will give the power of the Holy Spirit to the believers who are determined to take up the cross in response to God's call so that they can carry out the work of the church, God's work, and will also send helpers. In response to the Lord's call, I pray in the name of the Lord that you may become all faithful workers who point to the cross of the church and receive the blessing God has prepared for you.
