Title: Gate of the Sheep / John 10:1
Subject: Gate of the Sheep/ John 10:1-
In parables, Jesus referred to himself as the [shepherd of the sheep] and [the gate of the sheep].
Today we want to think about its meaning.
1. I am the shepherd of the sheep
1) Background
① The background Jesus is talking about comes from the case in which the Pharisees cast out a blind man in the previous chapter 9. The Lord is beginning to speak, knowing the incident where those who claimed to be the teachers of the Jews and pretended to be the only ones with the keys of the Old Testament cast out the poor man and expelled him from Judaism.
② This is the part that can be interpreted only by understanding the pastoral culture of the Jews first.
The Jews had two types of sheepfolds. One was a common cage made up of a high wall and a sturdy gate, which was used by everyone in the town. The shepherd called his sheep when he took them out, and it was the cage that was supposed to hear the sound and go out.
One was us, in the open air, in the fields, like the shepherds who were vigilant in the fields, who came to worship the baby Jesus. This cage is a simple cage, made up of low and flimsy walls, and without a door.
in the form of a cage, where shepherds were supposed to act as a doorway for the sheep guarding the sheep at the entrance.
③ In verses 1-6, Jesus spoke the words of illustration in the form of a common cage in the village, and in verses 7-9, Jesus is explaining by using the example of a cage in the field.
2) Understanding the content
① The shepherd enters through the door.
John 10:1 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever does not enter the sheepfold by the door but goes in another way is a thief and a robber.
John 10:2 The one who enters through the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
In the common cage, the fence is as high as 3-3.6M, and there are many sheep with different owners, and because the gatekeeper is a cage, the owner puts the sheep in at night, goes to the door in the morning and calls the sheep following the formal procedure It is meant to guide you.
The reason the Lord said this is that the distinction between the true shepherd and the false shepherd is the relationship between law and lawlessness. Jesus himself enters rightly through the door, because he is the true shepherd, leading the sheep to green pastures and still waters.
Conversely, thieves and robbers are those who cross the fence and grazing the sheep. The original word for theft is [meaning to cheat in secret] and robbery means [to use violence in public]. Rebuking the Pharisees and scribes of that time
Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing
Inside is a plundering wolf
② The sheep know the master's voice, and the master calls his own sheep and leads them.
John 10:3 The gatekeeper opens the door for him, and the sheep hear his voice, and he
They call each one by name and lead them out.
When the Jews come to the common pen in the morning to take the sheep, they open the door and call their own sheep out to take them out, and the sheep hears their master's voice and follows them. At this time, even if the other person wears the master's clothes or imitates his voice, he does not follow him when he is not his master. It is said that the Jews maintained a very close relationship with the sheep by calling them by name and calling them by name, and they used that name when calling their own sheep.
**Jesus was telling this parable, that those whom God has given him will follow him.
to say that

**Jesus explains with an example where he leads his sheep.

③ The shepherd leads in front.
John 10:4 When he has laid out all his sheep, he goes before them, and follows them, because they know his voice.
Western shepherds pick their horses from behind and lead their sheep with whips, but Israeli shepherds express their way of leading the sheep ahead.
**Jesus is saying these words to say that he takes the lead and goes ahead.
