Title: Give thanks immediately (Psalm 50:22-23)
Contents Thanksgiving begins in the Old Testament times. However, it has become a national event from the fall of 1621, the year after the Puritans landed on the American continent in search of freedom of religion. There were 102 Puritans who visited the American continent in the Mayflower ship from England. After landing in the U.S. port of Purimud in the fall of 1620, they battled various adverse conditions and saw the fruits of their farming. They first gave thanks to God for their harvest and worshiped. As a friendship with the Toin, the chief brought 90 Toin and 5 deer as gifts, attended the joyful worship service, and celebrated for three days. This breeze spread around the world and was kept as a national event in the United States in 1864, and the Korean General Assembly also observes the 3rd Sunday in November every year as Thanksgiving Day.
The Talmud, a Jewish book of wisdom, says: "When you lose a part of your life, think about what you have and give thanks to God. If one foot is injured, thank God that both feet are not injured. Even if both hands and both feet are injured, thank God that the neck is not broken. If the neck is broken, then there is nothing to worry about. You will be welcomed in heaven."
In the word God gave us today,
1. It is grace given to those who give thanks.
(Psalm 50:23) “He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies me, and to him who does the right thing I will show the salvation of God.”
A believer should be able to give thanks for everything.
There was a devout believer who always lived with gratitude. He lived happily with gratitude for even the little things that happened in his daily life. One day, he lost his 31-year-old son in a car accident. People went to the funeral and looked at his expression, thinking that he would not have any condition to be thankful for. However, those who attended the funeral that day heard his prayer and knew that [thanks to him] was okay. He prayed like this. "God, thank you for lending me my son for 31 years. Thank you all the more for taking me early because of heaven's need."
A saint said this: "Evergreens are always green even when the weather changes. They are green even in the sweltering summer and in the harsh winter of winter. Our life of faith should be like that. No matter how rapidly changing circumstances, it should be a life of constant gratitude that is not affected by it."
1) A person who gives thanks is a person who glorifies God.
Gratitude is the act of those who have received grace. Those who do not know grace do not feel gratitude to anyone. Those who receive grace feel gratitude. It is to give thanks to those who have received favor from both God and man.
(Matthew 26:6) “While Jesus was at the house of Simon the leper in Bethany (Matthew 26:7), a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very precious perfume and poured it on Jesus’ head while he was eating (Matthew 26:8) Disciple When the people saw it, they were angry and said, "For what purpose are you wasting this? (Matthew 26:9) It could have been sold at a great price and given to the poor." (Matthew 26:10) Knowing this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you doing this woman? (Matthew 26:11) The poor are always with you, but I will not always be with you (Matthew 26:12) This woman poured this perfume on my body at my funeral. (Matthew 26:13) Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in remembrance of her.” The Lord's gratitude for this is well expressed.
2) He said that he will show salvation to those who give thanks.
However, there are those who have received grace but do not know how to be thankful.
In (Luke 17:11-18), we see that when Jesus was going to Jerusalem, while passing between Samaria and Galilee, he met ten lepers. They cried out to the Lord. The Lord told them to show the priest your birth. When they returned, leprosy gave birth to them. But among them, a Samaritan came to Jesus and gave thanks, and the others left without giving thanks. (Luke 17:17) “Jesus answered and said, Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the nine? (Luke 17:18) Has no one returned to glorify God except these Gentiles?” (19) He said to him, “Rise and go, for your faith has saved you.”
A middle-aged gentleman woke up during an advertisement during the worship service and announced that he would donate $10,000 to God for sound equipment in the education building in remembrance of his son who died a few days ago in Vietnam. Then a woman sitting in the back seat suddenly poked her husband in the side and whispered. Let's do the same... Then her husband's eyes widened and he said, "My son isn't dead...!" Then the wife said, "Then you should give more!"
2. It is a reproof given to those who do not give thanks.
(Psalm 50:22) “Now, you who have forgotten God, consider this, or I will tear you to pieces, and there will be no one to rescue.”
