Title: Get to Know These People
Text/ 1 Corinthians 16:13-18, Philippians 2:19-30, 1 Timothy 5:17
1. Introduction
Everywhere in Samchul-ri of Korea is full of cultural heritage. Among them, the most common are the monument of Songdeok-Hyojabi-Yolnyeobi-Gongjeokbi-祠堂(Sadang)-浮屠(Budo). All of these cultural heritages are meant to commemorate the achievements of the person and pass them down to future generations.
In modern Western society, there is something called the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame commemorates athletes and supporters who have made outstanding records, achievements, and achievements in various fields of sports and arts (baseball, basketball, golf, figure skating, rock and roll, etc.) It is a system created for Every athlete's dream is to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. It is truly remarkable that Korean player Se-ri Pak (golf) was inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame in 2007.
However, 2000 years ago, the Apostle Paul also exhorts us to get to know “those who devoted their lives and worked hard for the church, preaching the gospel, and mission.
* For they refreshed my spirit and yours, therefore, know these people. For they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition (1 Corinthians 16:18)
*Therefore, welcome him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men. Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him (Phil 2:29).
*The elders who rule well should be counted with double honor, especially those who labor in word and teaching. The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose works is preaching and teaching (1 Timothy 5:17).
2. Why should I know?
All animals have physiological instincts (eating, sex, and sleep). Humans are animals too. However, in addition to the physiological instinct, humans also have the social instinct to want to be recognized by others. If you remember that the motive of the first murder case of mankind (the case where Cain killed his younger brother Abel) was “unrecognized anger”, people say, “I want to be recognized!” You can see how primordial instinct is.
Therefore, at the end of all his epistles, the apostle Paul gave thanks, praised, and recognized people for their hard work, naming them by name one by one. And especially in the text, like me, your saints are commanded to “know them, recognize them, give them honor, respect, and honor them.”
3. How will you know?
first. First of all, an open mind. You must have an open mind that can objectively recognize the achievements, achievements, strengths, characteristics, and abilities of others without being biased toward personal interests or subjective feelings of likes or dislikes.
