1 Corinthians 12
1. Diversity of Gifts and Spiritual Unity (1-11)
The gifts given to the saints vary. But the origin of the gifts is the Holy Spirit. Therefore, all gifts are means of serving the same Lord.
① Jesus is Lord.
At that time, pagan religions performed rituals with mystical currents, and the Corinthian church was also influenced by this mysticism. There were people in the church who interpreted and thought of the gifts as this mystical tendency, each claiming to one another that he had received the true Spirit. Paul made it clear that the work of the Holy Spirit in the saints is also based on the confession that “Jesus is Lord” because the spirit that confesses “Jesus is Lord” is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Jesus, and the spirit that is not, is an evil spirit and an idol.
② Diversity of spiritual gifts
Just as there are many members in the body, God's spiritual gifts are diverse and creative.
Since God's gifts are diverse, each should serve one another as he has been gifted.
The diversity of gifts
(1) God's grace is concrete and practical.
(2) It refers to the diversity of service, and members must be servants to each other and to God and their neighbors.
⑶ refers to the diversity of history. The power of God works through believers and works continuously in the church community.
⑷ The various gifts are for the good of the Church.
③ 9 spiritual gifts
⑴ Intellectual gifts - wisdom, knowledge
(2) Gifts of power - faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment of spirits
⑶ The Gift of Language - Tongues, Tongue Interpretation
These diverse gifts mean that the gifts of God are real, not theoretical, and that there are many charismatic offices but one God speaks of the unity of the church.
2. The body and members of Christ (12-31)
① Unity in diversity
The analogy of the body and the members.
The Corinthian church had a dispute over differences in gifts. Just as there are many members but one body, so the saints have many gifts, yet they are one in Christ. Since the church is the body of Christ and the saints are its members, the saints are closely connected with Christ in the church.
Therefore, although spiritual gifts are diverse, they are united in Christ the Head.
② Attitude of the gifted person
Each organ comes together to form a body. No matter how insignificant an organ may be, it cannot be removed. can't replace it Also, the weak-looking body is very important (22-23).
Therefore, take care of the weak saints.
③ Offices accompanying the gifts
⑴ Teaching ministry - apostles, prophets, teachers
(2) Volunteer - one who works miracles, one who heals
⑶ Administration - one who helps, one who governs
⑷ Communication with God - Tongues, Interpretation
Each person has different gifts and duties. So there is nothing to be proud of.
Gifts are not for personal glory, but service for the body of Christ, the church, to expand the kingdom of God.
And it concludes by saying that there is a greater gift than that, so we should long for the greater gift.
