Title: Glory in Heaven, Peace on Earth
Text: Numbers 6:22-27, Luke 2:8-14
What was the daily life of the shepherds when they first heard the news of the Messiah's birth? It was something that others were reluctant to do, but they were still tending the sheep for the sacrifices of the temple in Jerusalem, so would it be okay? It is reminiscent of the cleansing of the temple by Jesus. It reminds me of the circumstances behind the rebuke for creating the “den of robbers” (Luke 19:46). There was an incident that renewed their daily life. At a time and place you never expected. Sometimes, the wheel of history reveals an aspect that completely ignores our expectations. Judea, the Promised Land, was no exception. For the people of the vassal state who were groaning under the banner of “Roman Peace,” the “Hojeok Spirit” (戶籍令) was another shackle. In the midst of this, the Messiah is born. It is from Bethlehem, a small town from the tribe of Judah (Luke 2:1-7).
'Glory to God in the highest. On earth there is peace among those with whom he is pleased” (Luke 2:14). The song of angels and heavenly hosts that rang out in the night sky of Bethlehem after the first announcement of the birth of the baby Jesus. The Messiah had come, and he was lying in a manger in Bethlehem. According to Jewish custom, when a baby is born, local musicians sing a congratulatory song. However, it seems that the birth of the baby Jesus did not have a welcome from such a town. There was so much commotion that there was no place in the office. But the news came from heaven. It is handed down to the shepherds who kept their flocks at night outside the town of Bethlehem. Because of the angel of the Lord who appeared with Shekinah, the shepherds were “greatly afraid” even before they heard the news of the birth (Luke 2:8-9). The news that the angel delivered to the shepherds is the news of the birth of the Messiah that all mankind has been waiting for.
“Don’t be afraid. Behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will come to all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born, who is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you, and you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:10-12). The event of ‘glory in heaven and peace on earth’ is the birth of Jesus. If 'glory' represents the magnificence of heaven, 'peace' means the most blessed life on earth. The birth of Jesus Christ is the event that brought this life to life. Today's Old Testament text (Numbers 6:22-27) is a blessing prayer for the mission of the chosen people of Israel. As a descendant of Abraham, we receive the promised blessing first, and based on this, we fulfill our mission to become a blessing for all people (Genesis 12:1-3). "Peace and peace" was the sum total of the blessings that the elect will receive first as representatives of Manmin.
The present form of the kingdom of God is this ‘peace’ (Shalom, Numbers 6:26) and ‘peace’ (Eirene, Luke 2:14). Among the hymns representing peace and peace, there are 469 and 473. If we savor and praise the lyrics, we will discover the spiritual presence of each of us with an amazing feeling. 473 lyrics.l1. Ah! I have true peace in my heart/ The peace that the Lord Jesus gave me/ Even when temptations come, I will not be shaken/ Ah! precious this peace.
