Title: God's Discipline / 1 Kings 14:1-31

Contents

In the text, Rehoboam's reign and Jeroboam's reign appear respectively, and their sins and death are introduced. The events of this chapter, which are supposed to be the end of Jeroboam's reign, also describe that God's warning to Jeroboam and his house is now taking shape. Meanwhile, in the midst of this, the strong faith and boldness of the prophet Ahijah stand out. Ahijah's faith in delivering God's message directly without bowing to power contrasts with the ugly king who clings to worldly lusts.

1. Jeroboam and God's Judgment (1-20)

1) God cannot be deceived.

Abijah, the son of Jeroboam, became ill, so he went to the prophet, pretending to be someone else, to have his wife find out what would happen to his son. But the prophet noticed it. Even if you are a master of magic and disguise, it is impossible to deceive God. The only way a sinner can take before Him is repentance. Don't try to hide it.

2) The prophet Ahijah pointed out that sin.

It is pointed out that Jeroboam forgot the grace of God and did more evil than the previous men, making idols to provoke the wrath of the Lord. It is a fearful thing to forsake grace. The saints should know his calling and do it right.

3) God judges.

Disobedience and rebellion inevitably result in judgment. The prophet announces God's judgment on the house of Jeroboam. Anyone who sins should be afraid.

4) The word of the Lord fulfilled

As God had said, Abijah son of Jeroboam died. For his father's transgression, the son was put to death. God is not ignorant. All those who disobey and rebel against God must be punished.

2. Rehoboam's unbelief (21-31)

Solomon's son Rehoboam also did evil before God and built high places, idols, and Asherah poles and worshiped them. Not only that, he tolerated sodomy men whom God detested, and by imitating their habits, they acted as enemies of God.

1) Rehoboam being disciplined for being attacked by Shishak in Egypt

There were many treasures in the temple or royal palace in Jerusalem, but Shishak king of Egypt attacked Judah and confiscated all the treasures. God used Shishak of Egypt as a tool against Rehoboam. No matter how many things you build, if God does not protect you, you will not be safe. As Rehoboam obeyed God and became his enemy, all his treasures fell into the hands of the king of Egypt.

2) Make a bronze shield instead of gold

Rohoboam's actions were truly pathetic. What was required of him was repentance, but he was rather focused on avoiding it and taking humane measures. Those who have given up the faith do this.
