Old Testament

11. I know the thoughts I have toward you, says the LORD, to give you a future and a hope, with peace and not with evil.

12. If you cry out to Me and come to Me and pray, I will hear your prayers.

13. If you seek me with all your heart, you will find me and you will find me.

new testament

1. There was a certain sick man, Lazarus, who lived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

2. This Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped the Lord's feet with her hair, and Lazarus, who was sick, was his brother.

3. Then his sisters sent to Jesus, saying, “Lord, behold, the one you love is sick.”

4. When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "This is not a disease to die for, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified through it."

5. Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus.

6. When he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two more days where he was.

7. Afterward he said to his disciples, "Let's go back to Judea."

8. The disciples said, Rabbi, the Jews have just been stoned to stone, and are you going there again?

9. Jesus answered them, Are there not twelve hours in the day? When people walk in the daytime, they see the light of this world and do not stumble.

10. When he walks at night, he stumbles because there is no light in him.

11. After he had said these things, he said to them again, Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to wake him up.

12. The disciples said, "Lord, if I sleep, I will get better."

13. They thought that Jesus was referring to his death, but they were referring to his sleep and rest.

14. Then Jesus said plainly, Lazarus is dead.

15. I rejoice for you that I am not there, that you may believe, but let's go to him.

sermon

1. There is God’s ( ) in suffering.

When we face difficulties, we often attribute them to sin.

In many cases suffering has the character of judgment for sin. But not everyone who suffers can be blamed for sin. We tend to view suffering with a very narrow eye.

2. God suffers ( ).

We don't like suffering, but God uses it for good to grow His children. God grows us spiritually through suffering.

God wants us to mature through suffering. That is why He wants our personality to grow to maturity until we become like the image of Christ.

3. Our ( ) for suffering is important.

Much more important than identifying the cause of suffering is our response to it.

When faced with hardship, we ask, All of our energy is wasted on continuing to ask the question. But the more important question we need to ask is, “How should we respond to this suffering?”

Suffering is God's will. And God will use that suffering for our greater good. Our response to suffering is more important than the cause of that suffering. Be obedient to the end of the Lord's command to move the stone door.
