entry
What was the state of Israel at the time of Hosea's prophetic work?
Spiritually, his faith in God was in a state of corruption, and he was personally corrupted in ethics and corrupted as a nation.
From a historical perspective, the corruption of religion leads to the corruption of individual faith, the corruption of faith leads to the corruption of personal ethics, and the corruption of ethics leads to the corruption of the state, and in the end, the state is destroyed.
Seeing the northern Israel being destroyed nationally through this process, God wanted to save them from the path of destruction by awakening them through the prophet Hosea and making them know how much He loved them.
So, God chose the method that He chose to speak through the family life of the prophet Hosea.
Although the people of Israel had left themselves and worshiped various idols, He wanted them to experience the painful love of having to love a woman whom they could not love because the prophet Hosea married an adulterous woman, Gomer. . He wanted to experience the pain of having to marry a woman who could not take a wife.
The reason is that Israel, whom I regard as a wife, and whom I love as a wife, has left me, my husband, and is committing great fornication against idols.
So, God's command was, "Take an adulterous wife and have children of adultery."
“For this nation has departed from the LORD and committed great fornication.”
It was the word of God that a prophet could not understand, but the prophet Hosea obeyed.
Hosea followed God's word and married a prostitute named Gomer, a prostitute, and had their first child.
Because I did not have the first child, God gave me a name, and it was a name that contained a curse.
4 And the LORD said to Hosea, "Call his name Jezreel, for in a little while I will avenge the blood of Jezreel on the house of Jehu and bring an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel."
What does “Jezreel” mean?
It has a similar pronunciation to Israel, but the meaning is completely different.
‘Israel’ is the name of blessing.
Genesis 32:28 The man said to him, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.
But Jezreel means that God scatters.
The reason God named Hosea's son Jezreel was to scatter Israel. That is, it is a symbolic revelation of how Israel will be destroyed.
God foretold the destruction of Israel as the son of a prophet who was born of an adulterous wife.
When Hosea began his prophetic work, it was in the time of Jeroboam II, the third generation of Jehu.
King Jeroboam was a king who was strong in war, so he had a great nation externally, but his faith was corrupted by serving the golden calf and various idols.
For in a little while I will avenge the blood of Jezreel on the house of Jehu and bring an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.
Jehu was someone who destroyed Ahab's house.
What kind of king is Ahab? In the days of the prophet Elijah, Ahab, who took Jezebel, a foreign woman, as his queen, worshiped the god of Baal, which Jezebel brought, along with all the people, and all Israel was under the curse of God. It did not rain for three years and six months, and the prophet Elijah killed the 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. It was Ahab who did not repent after seeing God working with fire. At that time, Jehu started a revolution and destroyed all of Ahab's family in a valley called Jezreel and destroyed all the temples of Baal. Jehu became king of Israel.
God praised Jehu and made a promise.
2 Kings 10:30 And the LORD said to Jehu, "You have done what is right in my eyes, and you have done well in the house of Ahab, according to my heart. Your descendants will pass on to the throne of Israel four generations."
2 Kings 10:31 But Jehu did not keep the law of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart, and did not turn from the sin that Jeroboam had caused Israel to sin.
2 Kings 10:29 He did not depart from the sin of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, from the sin of serving the golden calf in Bethel and Dan.
However, they too did not keep the law of God with their whole heart as it says in the Word, but fell into the sin of serving the golden calf.
God said that I would pay the blood of Jezreel back to the house of Jehu after a while for this royal family of Jehu.
This is Jehu who rebelled against Ahab serving idols and doing evil, but seeing that they also fell into idolatry worshiping the golden calf, God will pay the price for the blood that destroyed Ahab on Jehu's house. And he said he was going to destroy the nation of Israel altogether.
Verse 4 - The kingdom of the house of Israel will be brought to an end.
What does the name Israel mean?
Israel wrestled with God and prevailed. This is the name Jacob got from God after he fought and won.
Genesis 35:10 And he said to him, "Your name is Jacob. Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel will be your name." And he called his name Israel.
Genesis 35:11 And he said to him, I am the Almighty God; be fruitful and multiply; from you a nation and many nations will be born, and kings from your loins.
Genesis 35:12 I will give you the land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac, and I will give it to your descendants after you.
Israel is the name of victory. It is a name that has won the battle with God.
// The name of prosperity. Grow and prosper Many peoples will come from you.
// The name of the royal family. Kings will come out of your loins.
// The name of eternal blessing. I will give you the land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac, and I will give it to your descendants after you.
But God declares that the kingdom will be abolished. Further Hosea 1:5 “In that day I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.”
Not only will he scatter his people from the valley of Jezreel, from the valley of curses, but he will break the bow.
What does the bow symbolize?
The bow symbolizes power.
Genesis 49:24 Joseph's bow is strong, and his arms are strong, by the hand of the Almighty of Jacob, from whom comes the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel.
Genesis 49:25 It is from the God of your father, who will help you, and from the Almighty he will bless you: Blessings from heaven above, and blessings from the fountains below, and blessings to nurse, and blessings to the womb.
Genesis 49:26 Your father's blessing is better than that of my father-in-law, and as eternal mountains are infinite, so this blessing will return to Joseph's head, and to the crown of his brethren.
The authority of God - the authority of the Almighty, the authority of the shepherd, the authority to help, the blessing of heaven, the blessing of the source, the blessing of suckling,
Tae's blessing - It means that He will not give you this kind of blessing now. According to this word of God, the fourth of Jehu
After the death of Zechariah, the royal family of Jehu, 30 years later, Israel was completely conquered by Assyria.
Totally ruined.
What is God saying to Israel through the prophet Hosea?
I am now in love with Israel, who is spiritually lewd, like your wife Gomer.
This is what you will tell them on behalf of me, and make them understand, so that they may turn away from idols and return to my husband, the LORD.
I want you to know that I still love Israel as a wife.
closing words
(Example)
A neighbor who couldn't see an elderly mother who spent her whole life in pain because of a child who had gone astray spoke to her.
"Forget about such a child. Then I will get sick. It's like I didn't give birth at all. What's the use of such a child? It's no use. Stay away./
Annoyed old woman answered.
"I want to be there too./ But if that kid was your child, I'd have forgotten it already."
That's right. Just as a mother is a mother who cannot forget and find her child no matter how deviated, God cannot forget the human who cried out in the image of God. In particular, how could there be those who led the descendants of Abraham who were called from Egypt to the Promised Land?
Even if they serve idols and go in an evil way, you cannot forget them. So, God wanted the prophet Hosea to go through the pain and make him understand, so that he could communicate his true love to them so that they could understand and come back.
