1. God the Son
① John 4:25-26 "The woman said to her, "I know that the Messiah is coming, who is called Christ. When he comes, he will tell us everything." Jesus said to him, "I am he who speaks to you."
② Christ is the eternal Son of God.
③ He is the key through which humans can know about God and history.
④ The Old Testament conveys the hope of the Messiah.
⑤ The Gospels record the incarnation of Christ.
⑥ The book of Acts explains that his work continues through the Holy Spirit.
⑦ The epistles interpret the person and work of Christ.
⑧ Revelation declares his final victory and glory.
⑨ When people read the Bible, they must keep in mind that Christ is the center.
2. His names
① In the Bible, there are 80 names used to describe the person, nature, and work of Christ. We will briefly mention a few of these.
② Christ
n Christ is his official title.
n This is a Greek word that corresponds to the Hebrew Messiah, and has the meaning of one who was anointed for salvation.
n Since the name Christ had political and military connotations to those of his contemporaries, he did not use it as a designation for himself outside of private conversation.
n Jesus, with his own approval, allowed his disciples to use this name privately (Matt. 16:17).
n But Jesus forbade his disciples to call him that way until he ascended (v.
n Because only then will the spiritual nature of the title be understood. He admitted that he was the Christ so as not to break his oath (Matt. 26:63-64).
n These job titles have been used as personal names.
③ Jesus
n Jesus is a human name for God the Son, a name that has the meaning of salvation.
n This title is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew word Yeshua, meaning Jehovah is salvation (Mark 1:21; Acts 4:12).
④ week
n Lord is another name for the son Hanan.
n In the New Testament when this name is used for him in a purely Christian sense, it means Jehovah in the flesh (1 Peter 3:15);
n Thomas confessed Jesus as “my Lord and my God” (John 20:28).
⑤ Word
n The word refers to Christ and is found only in the writings of John.
n This means an open and verbal manifestation. Logos is a word used by Greek philosophers to refer to the principles that govern the spirit of the world or the universe.
n However, John seems to be using the word in an essentially pure Hebrew sense, although it has been influenced by its philosophical use.
n John introduces the "Word" with the phrase "in the beginning" that seems to be related to Genesis 1:1.
n These two verses representing God's creative work are each introduced by "and God said".
n Therefore, a Logos is God's open and oral manifestation of God's creative work.
n John uses "the Word" to refer to the fact that Christ is also an open and oral manifestation of salvation.
⑥ factor
The n Son of man is a self-expression that Jesus liked to use to emphasize his humanity.
n Although essentially a messianic title, it has no political-military connotations.
n This designation suggests that Jesus became human-like for human salvation.
n In the Gospels, this designation is used only by Jesus, except when quoted by those who question him. This designation does not appear again after Acts 7:56 until Revelation 1:13, where Christ appears as the one who dwells in the churches.
⑦ Son of God
n The Son of God was used by both Jesus and others to emphasize the divinity of Jesus.
n However, only demons used this title as a direct address to Jesus.
n Jesus also admitted that he was the Son of God under the circumstances of the oath (Matthew 26:63-64).
n Some critics deny that Jesus himself claimed divinity.
n However, the fact that Jesus uses the title "Son" a lot in relation to God the Father rejects such denial. Notice John 10:30 "I and the Father are one".
n Jewish leaders saw this as a direct claim to divinity.
n They tried to stone Jesus for blasphemy.
n Because “who was a man, he called himself God” (John 10:33).
