Lesson 5 Shem, Ham, and Japheth (Genesis 9:18-19)
1. Shem, Ham, and Japheth were the sons of Noah. As a teenager, Noah became the father of mankind again, and the prosperity of mankind spread to the descendants of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. After saving Noah's family, God blessed them with the blessing of fruitfulness and prosperity, and told them that they would rule over all living things and use them as food (except blood) (Genesis 9:1-4). From the time of Adam, only plants were provided as food (Genesis 1:29~30), but animal plants were allowed after Noah's flood.
2. There is an important story about Shem, Ham, and Japheth. After Noah had been running the vineyard for the first time, he drank a lot of wine and was drunk and naked in the tent when his second son “Ham” came in and saw the scene and told the other two brothers, Shem and Japheth. He covered his face with a veil and stepped backwards, went to Noah and covered his lower body. Then, when Noah was drunk, he found out about it and cursed Ham. Ham was the son who exposed his father's shame, and the other two brothers were the sons who covered his shame. In other words, Ham was filial, and Shem and Japheth were filial.
3. Noah received the grace of God, and he had blessings and curses. So it was said, “Cursed be Ham, to be his brother’s servant”, “Praise the God of Shem” and “Japheth is great and wants to dwell in Shem’s tent” (Genesis 9:20-27). As a result, the descendants of Ham became a barbaric race, the descendants of Shem became the family of the Messiah (savior, Jesus) praising God, and the descendants of Japheth received all material, civil, and spiritual blessings.
