Title: Healing of Broken Emotions
Text: Isaiah 61:1-3, Luke 4:16-22
One of the characteristics of the Messianic Age is the reversal. It is a reversal in which the shadow and the sun, which seem like forever, are reversed (Isaiah 9:2). It means “to bring good news to the poor.” There is a saying that ‘even the country can’t relieve poverty’ (limits of welfare policy?). Only God can do it. Poverty here refers to all the hardships that the soul and body are experiencing (人間苦). You mention three difficulties. 'The brokenhearted', 'the captive', and 'the prisoner'. The suffering of the mind is mentioned before the suffering of the body. Healing, freedom, and release are preached (Isaiah 61:1). The Jubilee Year is proclaimed and the Day of Shinwon begins. The oil of joy is anointed in the place of all sorrow, and the garment of praise is clothed in the place of all sorrow, and he is called “the one who will reveal the glory of the Lord” (Isaiah 61:3).
Draw a beautiful picture and pay attention to ‘God heals the brokenhearted’. The words of the old wise man. ‘The spirit of a man is able to overcome sickness, but when the spirit is broken, who can bring it up?’ (Proverbs 18:14). It says that damage to the soul, an invisible realm, is a problem in human life, the existence of ‘soul and body’. These are the painful wounds that we experience in our daily lives (‘unsettled’). The saving grace that God gives comes with “healing of broken emotions.” It is a problem for us who were born under original sin and live in an imperfect world. A young boy is hurt on Christmas Eve when he discovers that in the socks he hangs in anticipation of a gift from Santa, instead of a gift, he finds dirty stones in it. This wound of self-esteem can become a vicious cycle that will haunt you for the rest of your life.
There are two extremes to superficial healing. It is a generalized remedy such as a quick conclusion that you are possessed by a demon and hasty cures for it (exorcise of demons) and 'I strengthen my faith by reading the Bible and praying a lot? There is a risk. You fall into the trap of perfectionism, accompanied by guilt and shame. Healing a broken emotion requires a helper who has experienced the pain and healing of a broken emotion. It is the help of the High Priest Jesus Christ who sympathizes with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:14-16). Another helper is the help of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:26). Here's David A. Seamans' suggestion on the need for thoughtful counselling. 1) Face the problem directly. “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed” (James 5:16). 2) Acknowledge that you are responsible for any problems. It is about acknowledging and confessing responsibility for what happened.
3) Ask yourself if you really want to be healed. This is the meaning of the question the Lord asked the 38-year-old sick man by the pool of Bethesda (John 5:6b). 4) Forgive all those involved in the problem (Matthew 6:12). Taking responsibility for yourself and forgiving others are two sides of the same coin. 5) Forgive yourself. ‘I know that your God has forgiven me. But I have to let go of the attitude of 'I can never forgive myself'. 6) Ask the Holy Spirit what the core of the problem is and how to pray for it (Romans 8:26). There is an anecdote of Henry Ford and the electrician Steinmetz that reminds us of the help of the Holy Spirit. Healing of broken emotions is possible only through the intercession of our High Priest, Jesus Christ. Let us believe and obey the guidance of the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:16-22).
