Title: Hear, O Israel / Deuteronomy 6
1 “Hear, O Israel” (1-9)
The characteristic and theme of Deuteronomy is “Hear”. “Listen, learn, observe, and do” (5:1), a theme that recurs in Deuteronomy. This is also a common theme in the Bible. It is the way for us to be blessed (3,19,24), the way for our days to be long (2) the way for our prosperity and (3) the way to become righteous (15). Blessed are the ears that can hear. The Bible or sermons are essentially for listening, receiving, and eating, not for study or judgment. The secret to being able to hear, receive, and eat is to have an attitude of repentance, humility, and love, relying on blood and the Holy Spirit.
The core of God's Word is to love the one and only Jehovah God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength (5). The second is to love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18). This is the content of the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments (Deuteronomy 5:6-21) and the whole law and the prophets (Matthew 22:40). He told them to listen to the Word, learn it, observe it, and practice it, but “engrave it in your heart,” “teach it diligently,” “always preach,” and “write it down” and meditate on it.
2 “Be careful not to forget the Lord, and fear and serve the Lord God” (10-19)
God is the God of blessing who blesses His children who believe in Him, follow Him, and obey Him. He will give you spiritual blessings as well as temporal and material blessings. He causes them to enter the promised land, obtain cities, build houses, obtain orchards, and eat to their fullness. But the problem is that when people receive material blessings, they forget God, become proud, and follow the world and idols. So God was always concerned about this when he gave us blessings (Deuteronomy 8:14,17). And my sister said, “I commanded you to fear and serve the Lord God, and to swear by his name. He told them not to follow other gods. Because God is jealous. And he commanded us not to test God, but to do what is right and good in God's sight.
3 “In the latter days, when your son asks you, ‘What is the meaning of this commandment of God?’” (20-25)
Listening to God's Word, learning it, keeping it and doing it, you and your descendants must continue to listen, learn, and obey. Faith must be passed down and passed on through tradition and heritage. We must teach and pass on the will of God's Word to our descendants (20), teach and learn the work of salvation that God has done (21-23), and allow our descendants to fear God and always enjoy blessings (24). “If we and you take heed to keep every command that God has commanded, it will become our righteousness,” he commanded. The family of faith is the greatest blessing.
