Text / Luke 22:19-23
This Passover dinner was Jesus' last meal. Jesus knew that. So Jesus changed the Passover supper to signify Christ's death, and he wanted his disciples to have a new relationship with him.
"And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you." "(Luke 22:19-20)
Just as he saved the people of Israel from their sins in Egypt, Jesus is now leading all of God's people from their sins. The bread symbolizes his body. His body is his flesh, torn for our sins.
The cup symbolizes his blood. His blood has the power to save all who believe from eternal death. His blood guarantees eternal security.
The dinner that Jesus shared with his disciples that night was of great importance. It was the culmination of Jesus' life and ministry. Jesus spoke of the covenant. Because the blood of the Lord was the instrument of the new covenant. The covenant takes place between at least two peoples. Jesus Christ established a covenant between Himself and man. This refers to the relationship between God and man. That relationship was a new relationship and a new covenant. At the Last Supper, Jesus explained his life and death. Because he wanted to establish a new relationship between God and man.
"Take, eat, this is my flesh," said Jesus. "Take and drink, this cup is the blood of the covenant, which is shed for you."
Because the Lord wanted His disciples to accept His love and remember its importance. God is in Jesus Christ. Jesus showed us how great God's love is through his sacrificial death. Because God loves mankind, He gave His only begotten Son. Jesus suffered all the pain. Because of God's great love, Jesus chose death. Even though we have sinned, God still loves us. Because Jesus chose this path because He cut His body and shed His blood, everyone had the opportunity to have a new relationship with God. Everyone has the opportunity to experience God's amazing love.
It is through this wonderful grace that we praise God. After the Lord's Supper, the disciples "goed out to the Mount of Olives, praising." “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good and his mercy endures forever” (Psalm 136:1,26). This is the song that all Christians should sing with joy after eating the Lord's Supper.
Before Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane and before suffering in the Sanhedrin court, he held the Last Supper. Before Jesus ate this Last Supper, he blessed the food. Because Jesus thought of the kingdom of God the Father.
Dear saints,
The cross of Jesus Christ is never a failure. The cross of Christ reveals glory. The reason he went to Calvary is so that we may come boldly before the throne of God. His body and his blood give us the wonderful blessing of salvation in the new covenant. As you partake of the sacrament today, remember how much Jesus loves you. Think about how Jesus gave his life and how he opened the gates of heaven for you to enter the kingdom of God. Let us praise God for the wonderful grace that sets you free from sin and gives you eternal life.
