Sermons for Preaching

While Jesus was eating at the house of Simon the leper in Bethany, a woman brought an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, pure nard, broke the jar and poured it on Jesus' head. He rebuked the woman, saying, "I could have sold this perfume for more than three hundred denarii and gave it to the poor." Jesus said to him, "Leave it alone, why are you tormenting him? He has done a good thing for me." The poor are always with you and can help you whenever you want, but I will not always be with you. He anointed my body with ointment with all his might, preparing for my burial. Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in remembrance of her. (Mark 14:3-9)

Before His crucifixion, Jesus went up to Jerusalem and ate at the house of Simon the leper. A woman appeared, broke the alabaster, and poured precious oil on Jesus' head. At this time, one of the people who was present complained that it would be better to sell this expensive oil to help the poor instead of wasting this expensive oil like this. Jesus said, "This woman has done a good deed. Stop it. She has already prepared my burial." He said, "Proclaim what this woman has done to the world." And this writer of the Gospel of Mark continued to write an article about the sale of Jesus by Judas Iscariot for 30 pieces of silver, comparing the woman with Judas Iscariot. We were able to see the human figures of two people who appeared before Jesus. What this woman did here, that is, breaking the alabaster and pouring perfume on Jesus' head is a very meaningful and symbolic act.

The point is that a person's worth corresponds to the value of the object according to whom he dedicates himself. Originally, I think that this woman was a woman who was caught in adultery and nearly stoned to death. However, by sacrificing his body to Jesus now, his body becomes as valuable as an alabaster, and he pours out all his life for Jesus, giving off fragrance. Today, if human beings return to the original nature of creation, fully trust God, and live rightly with God-centeredness, human physical functions are truly of amazing value. There is no machine, no matter how precise, that exceeds the structure of the human body, and no machine, no matter how good it is, can be used for good work as well as the human body. Because the human body or life is wrong and used as an instrument of God's betrayal, it becomes a dirty body and a dirty human being.

Newspapers, radio, TV, etc. often find and report on such material to show the bright and beautiful side as well as the dark and dirty side of society. However, most of the protagonists on the bright side come from a Christian background. It is no coincidence that the majority of Christians are Christians who cast dark shadows, but still exude bright light and fragrance. Because they live by directly dedicating their body and mind to God, their body becomes an amalgam, and a strong fragrance spreads in their life and heart. The best way to get rid of bad odors is to neutralize the stench and eat it, and change it into a good odor if you let the stench smell good. We need to produce a lot of these Christian human figures. Just like the scent of acacia flowers covering mountains and fields in spring, when we live with the faith of sacrificing our newlyweds to the Lord, we can overcome the smell of corruption in this society by emitting the beautiful fragrance of life.

Dedicated service doesn't count. Serving God cannot be served by counting. It is unconditional and exclusive. Here, the suggestion of what would happen if Judas Iscariot, an unknown man, sold this oil and gave it to the poor for alms, did not yet know the true intention of Jesus. Jesus already said, "Whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me." In serving those who are suffering in this society, Christians must do unconditional service beyond calculation. Unless it is unconditional service, it is not true service. The world is still looking for such a human image. We pray that we can live such a life of faith.

Another human figure is Judas Iscariot. He was always counting on following Jesus. It is an attitude of following one's gains and incomes and resenting them when there is a loss. His life was completely self-centered. He is a man who does everything he can to protect himself. As a result, what kind of human image is shown, it appeared as a stingy, cunning, cunning, double ugly human figure. It's very interesting what his appearance looked like. All the Gospels consistently write that the devil entered him from the time Judas Iscariot was thinking about selling Jesus. This means that he was a very promising handsome man before he had the idea of selling Jesus, but from the moment he embraced that sinful thought, his appearance looked just like the devil. His appearance and his heart were all evil, cunning, double, venomous, poisonous and demonic. When human beings become self-centered and calculating, they turn into a terrifying evil species, and a stench is emitted from it.
