Title Two Prayers/Luke 18:9-14
Two prayers
▨ Luke 18:9-14 ▧
In Luke 18:1-14, there are two parables about prayer. Verses 1-8 are the parables of the unjust judge and the widow, and verses 9-14 are the parables of the Pharisees and the salespeople going up to the temple to pray.
The temple refers to the church. The Jews prayed three times a day at 3, 6, and 9 (9, 12 and 3 o'clock in our time). In other words, the 3rd prayer in the temple means that 'the church should be a place of earnest prayer'. In Acts 3:1 it says, “At the ninth hour, at the hour of prayer, Peter and John went up to the temple.”
An important role of the church is prayer. Jesus rebuked the money changers and those who sold doves in the temple.
the meaning of the word prayer
① Thesis = (Request) Just like a child asks a parent, I ask for the things I need in my life.
② Eucharistia = (Thanks) It is to thank you for giving me everything. Gratitude is like a confirmation that you have faith.
③ enteusis = (supplication) This is done in urgent, special, or important situations.
George Muller (English missionary) is a prayer all-rounder. He was a child of poor quality as a young man. He used to steal and lie, but at the age of 20, he was a person who did not change much when he studied theology at Halle University. One day, my friend Beta and I attended a prayer meeting at the lodge and received the fire of prayer and received a great change. He dedicated his life to orphans, raising 2,000 orphans. He asked, thanked, and pleaded with God in prayer every day. Before he died, he confessed, "I have received 50,000 prayers answered."
1. This is the prayer of the Pharisees.
Verses 11-12, "The Pharisee stood and prayed by himself, saying, "God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers, nor like this publican. I give you a tithe of
The Pharisees were one of the three major denominations along with the Sadducees and Essenes of Judaism at the time. At the time of Jesus, there were about 6,000 members. The contents of their prayers were not extortion, injustice, or adultery. What he did not commit extortion, unrighteousness, or adultery, and what he did, he fasted twice a week and paid tithing.
Who is the happiest person in the world? I think of you as someone who did not go to heaven even though you believed in Jesus. There is no salvation for apostates, secularists, and even going to church. There are many people who believe in Jesus and pray, but have not received an answer.
Today's protagonists are the Pharisees. They also believed in the afterlife. He said there were angels. It was eager. They are more distinct than ordinary people, and they say they will live according to the Word. But their prayers were self-pride. There was no response.
Watch 2 People Who Say They Pray
① Church Hall/ Do you neglect church prayer when praying? The best prayer than a prayer center is prayer in your own church. It is the prayer of the Pharisees to criticize the church while praying and accuse the servant of the Lord.
② Look at changes in personality/ especially language. Negative lips. They criticize others and are out of harmony. Prayer is the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit unites us. The Holy Spirit gives abundant love. The language is different.
God did not hear the Pharisee's prayer. It was a proud prayer. Don't you have a Pharisee look to me? When we pray, we must prevent Satan from taking advantage of the devil. I hope that God will answer you by praying the right prayer.
2. This is the publican's prayer.
Verse 13 says, “The publican stood afar off, and did not dare lift up his eyes to look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, “Have mercy, O God, for I am a sinner.”
A tax collector is an official engaged in tax administration, today a tax office employee. Zacchaeus was a publican. He is the head of the tax office. At that time, tax collectors exploited taxes. The Jews stayed away.
It is a prayer of humility, "without looking up to heaven". “Beating the breast” refers to earnest prayer of repentance.
There are two types of prayer.
①Prayer that God does not receive = This is the prayer of the Pharisees. It is a prayer that is intended to be seen by people, a formal prayer.
②Prayer that God accepts = The prayer of a publican. It is a prayer with humble repentance. It is an earnest prayer. There is a clear answer from God to these prayers.
The publican's prayer is to look up to heaven and turn to God. It is an earnest prayer. It is a prayer that we pray earnestly and deeply spiritually while beating our hearts (repenting).
conclusion
Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
Prayers are always answered. In the name of the Lord, I pray that the members of our church will pray like a publican and receive an answer, not the prayer of a Pharisee.
