Bible Text: Genesis 32:24-32
what is your name
A certain rogue went to a man reputed to be honest and said: “I want to buy your name for 1,000” “Why are you buying my name?” “Your name alone can make you 10,000,” he said. Just because a villain buys an honest man's name doesn't make him an honest man. Only those who live honestly are worthy of the name. A person who is not in accord with his words and deeds will receive no respect, and his words do not carry any weight. No matter how sincere you are, you lose credibility the moment it comes out of your mouth.
The name contains the “attributes” of the person. A name is a person's 'habit' and 'personality'. His name is his thoughts and his deeds. “The man said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob” (verse 27). He called him Jacob...” (Genesis 25:26). Jacob means 'the one who seizes'. What is your name? The question is who are you? The question is who are you? It's about what you think and what kind of life you live.
A person who wrestles with God.
What is your name? He is a wrestler. “Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him all day long” (verse 24). A man was wrestling with Jacob. Who is the person speaking here? It is interpreted as “Jesus Christ before he came into this world in the flesh”. It is God the Son in the Trinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He used to hold onto his brother's heel when he was born, but now he is wrestling with God the Son.
“In the wrestling board, even between rich and poor, we have to win.” Jacob is caught by God, and God is wrestling with Jacob. But the wrestling doesn't win. It flips upside down. Verse 25 says, "When he saw that he had not overcome Jacob, he struck Jacob's thigh, and Jacob's thigh was dislocated as he wrestled with the man."
The word ssireum means ‘to raise dust’, ‘to hold tight’, ‘to hug’. Ssireum is a desperate struggle. Passion, enthusiasm, and tenacity can be seen in Jacob as he wrestles. Imagine Jacob wrestling all night long. I'm sweating profusely and panting. My clothes were all wet with sweat. It didn't end with a single win. If you fall, get up again and fight again.
Life is a wrestling after all. It is a struggle to seize and conquer the opponent. It's about putting in all your might and putting in all your might. The three major liquids in life are sweat, tears and blood. The amount of fluid your body leaves makes your life.
Look at verse 26. “He said, ‘Let me go as the day is dawning.’ Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” All night long, they wrestle until dawn. I've been wrestling all night. You have to study all night and work all night. Anyone can do what anyone can do.
Michael Jordan, called the basketball king, was not a basketball genius from a young age. When I was in high school, there was a time when I cried because I couldn't be selected as a basketball player. Basketball is not suitable, so I was advised to go to the Air Force Academy. But Jordan liked basketball. I never let go of the ball to be a basketball player. He threw the ball and caught the ball to become a player. I ran and ran again. He doesn't know how much he sweats. “To be the best, you have to pay a price,” Jordan said. You have to sweat a lot.” Jordan became the basketball king by wrestling with the ball, and Jacob wrestled with God and became a source of blessing. Jacob is like a flame. He is an unstoppable fiery passion.
A person who seeks blessings from God.
What is your name? He is the one who asks God for blessings. “...Jacob said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."
What is the blessing? What do you consider a blessing? He does not set his mind on falsehood, does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, and does not stand in the way of sinners. Those who have been saved and have obtained the righteousness of God. And seeking the face of God (Psalm 24:4-6). The presence of God is the greatest blessing. It is to have fellowship with God, receive His teachings, and enjoy the peace of God.
“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). This is a blessing. to face his glory. “Peniel” means “faced with God” (verse 30). The sun rose as we passed Peniel.
What is your name? I hope that you, like Jacob, will seek blessings from God. To seek the face of God is to seek blessing. His name is The Hungry One. They are hungry for the blessings of God. His name is Faith. His name is prayer and supplication. I prayed desperately. Hold on tight and stretch.
There are qualities of a successful person. Persevere, never give up. Jacob's instinct is to succeed. Why do people need training? To change your instincts and change your habits. It is human nature to want to live comfortably and easily. We pray and train to suppress that instinct and become renewed. Philosopher Nietzsche said, “He who cannot command himself must listen to others.” I must teach me, I must rebuke me, and I must discipline myself.
It is Jacob's instinct to want to be blessed. I wanted to be blessed even though I deceived my brother and deceived my father. His prayers are instinctive. They struggle to push their limits. He is the second son. But he wants to be the firstborn. I want to receive the blessing of the firstborn. What is your name? Blessing. Prayer.
He is the one who has won the battle with God.
At Nippon Computer, all employees shout slogans every morning. From a small company to a large company, it has continued to grow. “You can lose in the beginning, but in the end you will surely win” is the thought. While shouting slogans, I was able to overcome the psychological weakness of “I am not even a doctor, how do I make such a thing”. It is said that even when shouting slogans, you should not make a crawling sound. When you shout out loudly with a voice like thunder, you will be energized and your energy will be doubled.
can do! can do! The moment you shout, a circuit that says you can do it is planted. It is a slogan that you can do it by driving out the circuit that says no. The slogan that we can do it made the group that overcomes the group that gives up.
What is your name? He is the victor. No one who wins is generous with himself. One of many people's misconceptions is that "time brings growth." It is the belief that it will change and develop as time goes by.
It's not like that. It doesn't get better with age. become more stubborn. Time wears out everything. The clothes are getting old and the faces are getting old. My growth and my development must be made by myself. Relentless self-management Self-regulation is the key to success. You cannot be a conqueror without training yourself for self-improvement and improvement.
What is your name? This is Jacob. "And he said, 'Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have overcome with God and with men'" (verse 28). Jacob's name became "Israel." The persistent one wins in the end. The one who droops to the end wins. He is the one who has won the battle with God. Israel is the victor after wrestling. God blessed Jacob. Blessing is to miss the name. It has changed people.
A name implies a person's character, status, and future. The hardest job in this world is changing people. Change is difficult. You must turn me into a conqueror. It is a blessing to change my name, who has lived as a loser. To win, you need to focus on “trying”. It takes courage to try. Courage is something to try. There is a saying, "Logic doesn't change emotions, but actions change emotions."
Gandhi said. “One action is better than a thousand prayers.” In life, practice is more important than knowledge. It hits you with your body. Knowledge is not power, but action is power.
We must hold on to God and stretch out. That's what comes out. As Jesus passed by, a woman said that my daughter has a demon! and cried out. Jesus passed by without answering. You said that I was sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Jesus also said that you cannot give your children's bread to dogs. Then the woman said, "Even dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table." I did. At that time, Jesus said, “Woman, great is your faith, it will be done as you wish” and the daughter was healed immediately (Matthew 15:21-28). The woman does not appear by name. “Canaanite woman”. He is the “woman who cried out” to Jesus. A woman who was not hurt even after being called a dog. His name was “a woman of great faith” and “a woman with a loud voice.”
When Jesus reached the region of the Gerasenes, a man possessed with a demon came out of the tombs and met him. He told Jesus not to trouble me. Jesus asked him. “What is your name?” My name is Army. After casting out the demons of the army, Jesus said, “Go home and tell your relatives how great the Lord has done to you, and how he has compassion on you” (Mark 5:1-19).
The man who answered “military” was a man controlled by a demon. The demons left and I became a healthy person ruled by Jesus. He was commanded to tell of the great things the Lord had done to him. What is your name? Be a wrestler. Be a person who seeks blessings from God. I hope that Israel will compete with God and win. I hope you will become the Canaanite woman who defeated Jesus.
