Who is my neighbor?
(Luke 10:25-37)
Today's text is about the Good Samaritan and deals with human concern and indifference. The story begins with a dialogue between Jesus and the lawyer.(…) The lawyer asked, “What must I do to obtain eternal life?” This is a question that anyone who is serious about life should ask at least once. These words are questions such as “How can I be saved?” and “How can I enter the kingdom of heaven?” But Jesus knew that the lawyer's interest was not in the law, but in taunting him. So Jesus asked the lawyer, and the lawyer answered correctly. (…) But he was not a man who lived as much as he knew the law. He knew that he was a man who never lifted a finger while teaching people well, so he said, “Your answer is correct. You do it too.”
The lawyer said, "Then who is my neighbor?" They were poised to argue over who the hell they were referring to as neighbors. (…) Jesus kindly explained someone to the neighbor, even though he knew the wicked heart of the lawyer. That is the story of the Good Samaritan that everyone is familiar with.(…)
What is the scariest thing for a priest or a Levite? That is indifference. Even though no one sees the valley of Jericho, how can you just go to see people dying? When I see a dying animal, I feel pity for it, how much more can a person pass on it when it is dying? The world is filled with indifference from a surprisingly cold heart. Selfishness makes you see only yourself or your family. Modern man is becoming a slave to indifference.(…)
God wants mercy rather than worship. What is mercy? It is concern for neighbors, compassionate heart, and laboring love. It is not to pretend that you have good faith when you do not have compassion in your heart. Indifference leads to disbelief. Indifference destroys relationships, destroys families, and destroys lives. Indifference takes away all hope of this land and sows despair.(…)
Spiritually, we must not be indifferent to our neighbors who are killed by robbers. It is half love as long as you help your neighbor when they are having a hard time. It becomes perfect love until it reaches the point of saving souls.(…)
Our life is like a fleeting day. Today may be the last time. Natural disasters happen incessantly, and major accidents often occur. Those who seek life and property have set a snare around us. Why are there so many unexpected diseases? Today may be the last. This is the world we live in.
The Lord says “Go and do likewise”, “Do like the Samaritans” Pay attention! Build a relationship! And pray! Neighbor Invitation is not just an evangelism movement. “Go and do likewise” means to find a true neighbor. Interest makes our lives come alive. Indifference makes our lives bleak. Indifference is disobedience and unbelief. Interest is obedience and the beginning of spiritual revival. Amen.
