Jesus hung on the cross and spoke seven times. The words “Eli Eli Ramasabachthani” or “I am thirsty” were cries of pain that could not be expressed in words of spirit and flesh. But now, the word 'It is finished' is a declaration of victory.
? The original biblical word ‘tetelestai’, which means “it is finished”, has this important meaning.
① ‘It’s finished’ It means that all responsibility for mankind’s sins has been completed.
② ‘I paid it all’ meaning that the price of redemption has been paid
③ ‘It’s all over’ meaning that all the requirements of the law have been completed
④ ‘All answered’ It means that you have responded to God’s call.
All of these meanings, in a word, mean completion and achievement. Let's look at this in more detail.
I. It is a declaration of the fulfillment of all prophecies.
? Thousands of years before Jesus came, numerous prophecies were recorded in the Bible. All of those prophecies were surprisingly fulfilled. Before the fate of Jesus, the last prophecy, “I am thirsty” (28), saw that it was fulfilled and said, “It is finished,” and declared the fulfillment of all prophecies.
II. It is a declaration of the consummation of suffering.
? Who can explain in words or writing the agony of the shed all the water and blood on the cross? The suffering of death began from the time of the Lord's birth, and now that suffering was completed on the cross. He paid the price for our sins.
Ⅲ. It is a declaration of the achievement of the purpose of the incarnation.
? Jesus came in the body and took on all the sins of mankind that he had to bear. He bore all the punishment required by the law in His body. This is a declaration of completion and victory.
IV. It is a declaration of the fulfillment of redemption.
? Without blood there is no payment for sin. Redemption was completed by paying the price by shedding all the blood in the body during the six hours on the cross. Seeing this, he declared, “It is finished.”
Ⅴ. It is a declaration of the destruction of Satan's power.
? Satan thought that if Jesus was killed, Christianity would be destroyed and ended, but Christianity flourished and Satan's destructive forces failed. When he saw that the power of Satan was destroyed, he declared, “It is finished.”
Today, let us remember the fact that Jesus proclaimed victory by saying, “It is finished” when he died to embrace me and save me. Let's be moved by the victory of the Lord's suffering and receive the bread and cup with a grateful heart.
