Title Meaning of genealogy/Matthew 1:1-25
Contents
The Gospel of Matthew is the record of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. In particular, today's text is about the genealogy of Christ the King and the announcement of his birth.
1. The meaning of genealogy (1-17)
When Matthew introduces the genealogy of Jesus, he mentions Abraham and David. It means that Jesus was born from a virgin body through the blood of a king and of a nation chosen by God.
Jesus came as the descendant of Abraham, the father of the Jews, and David, the great king.
At the same time, he is the one who was born on this earth through an unusual union like in the case of Tamar and Bathsheba, and through a Gentile like Rahab or Lot.
At the same time, Jesus introduces that the Jews are not the only Messiah, but the Savior of all mankind and the Messiah that transcends status.
As for our human genealogy, it is common sense to praise our ancestors for their actions or to glorify their mistakes.
But the genealogy of our Lord describes the deeds of our shameful ancestors as they are.
Not only that, but the names of unthinkable women are recorded in genealogy.
From this, we can see that Jesus did not simply take on a human body, but fully understands my weakness and shame because he became a man very thoroughly.
2. Joseph's role (18-25)
Jesus was born as a Jew, but unlike other people, he was conceived by the Holy Spirit.
In the process of being conceived and born by the Holy Spirit of Jesus, the role of Joseph, the father of the flesh, was very important.
He secretly tried to settle the pregnancy of Mary, whom he had been betrothed to as a righteous man.
In those days, it was the law to stone them to death. Joseph does not try to solve these injustices by revealing them to the world, but rather shows the aspect of Joseph's respect for humanity.
In the meantime, I came to know the wonderful revelation of God.
After knowing the will of God's revelation, he was a person who obeyed that will.
Just as this godly man's role was necessary for Jesus' birth, so today Jesus Christ
In order to be newly known on this earth and to plant Jesus Christ in people's hearts,
We need someone like Joseph who is godly and personable.
Today, living a Christian life that shows Jesus Christ through a godly life
I hope it will be a day.
