Title Name Jesus / Matthew 1:18-25
The virgin Mary conceived a child. Upon learning of this, his fiancee, Joseph, was a righteous man and quietly tried to break the engagement. Then an angel appeared and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife. The woman was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and she will give birth to a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” (20-21)
I. Name revealed through angel: one who will save his people from sin
Without an angel, the birth of Jesus cannot be immediately understood. Joseph, Mary, and the shepherds also heard the angel's words and came to know who Jesus was and why He came as a human being. So, what was the name of Jesus, and what did the angel tell him? The name Jesus is a Greek form of the Hebrew word Joshua (Jeshua, Jeshua, Joshua). In other words, it means that Jehovah is salvation. The angel's word that he was the one who would save his people from their sins was confirmed through his name.
II. God is with us: Jesus incarnate as Emmanuel
God must be for His people. But he is not only for the people, but also for his people. It is Emmanuel. He is not only a God who commands, protects, or leads, but a God with us.
Ⅲ. God is always with us
God is with us, but He is not only with us yesterday, but He is also with us today and concretely with us tomorrow. He was with us in our times of joy and sorrow; He was with us when we were tempted; He was with us when the temptation of evil stretched out its black hand and endured. Even when we were in the spiritual warfare with Satan, He did not forsake us and was with us. Even when we cross the hill of death on the last day, God will be with us. God knows our situation and is always with us.
*Conclusions are given.
