“And God spoke all these words, saying, I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage” (Exodus 20:1-13).
As the Israelites journey to a land flowing with milk and honey, God tells them to remember the promise. It is also a warning that when we believe and obey God's promises, we will be able to settle safely in the land of Canaan.
If you ask the saints to memorize the Ten Commandments, most of them will probably start with, "First of all, you shall have no other gods before me." But if you give the same spell to the Israelites, they say that they memorize the preface first. “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” But if you look closely, the preface is very important. The preface to the Ten Commandments reminds us that it was Jehovah God who brought the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt.
In this way, the Exodus reminded us that God had set His people free. In addition, the Exodus served as a guide to the land of Canaan, the destination for the Israelites to go. The Ten Commandments given through Moses on Mount Sinai commanded us to live in the land God led by keeping God's commandments. Then you will enjoy freedom in Canaan flowing with milk and honey.
The Ten Commandments were so good for the people of Israel, but as time passed, people lost their deep meaning and only saw heavy burdens in the Ten Commandments. It was not a burden to be borne by them, but to others instead. Why? This is because he did not see the Ten Commandments as a guide to the land of Canaan flowing with milk and honey, but as a standard for judging others. So God said this through the prophet Jeremiah. “I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people” (Jeremiah 31:33).
