Verse 1

spake. Indicating a new subject. See note on Leviticus 5:14. The ritual is prescribed in Exodus 28:1-43 and Leviticus 29:1-37. Now the appointment to the priestly office resumes the instructions broken off in Exodus.

door = entrance.

tabernacle = tent. Hebrew. "ohel. App-40.

Verse 4

as = according as.

Verse 5

This is the thing. See Exodus 28:1-43; Exodus 29:1-37; now made known to the People.

Verse 6

washed = the "divers washings" of Hebrews 6:2. After this, all ceremonial washings done by the persons for themselves. These are rendered "baptisms" in Septuagint of Leviticus 11:25, Leviticus 11:40; Leviticus 17:15, Leviticus 17:16; Leviticus 14:8; Leviticus 15:8, Leviticus 15:13, Leviticus 15:16, Leviticus 15:21, Leviticus 15:22, Leviticus 15:27. Extended to "clothes", Leviticus 11:25, &c.

Verse 7

the girdle. Not the band of the ephod called the "curious girdle", but the one of needlework, Ch. Leviticus 16:4 and Exodus 28:39.

Verse 8

also. Thus distinguishing these two stones from the twelve stones, which were quite distinct. Compare Exodus 25:7.

the Urim and the Thummim. See note on Exodus 28:30.

Verse 9

mitre = turban or tiara. See Exodus 28:36-38.

golden plate, or crown. Exodus 28:36, &c.

holy. See note on Exodus 3:5.

Verse 10

anointing oil. See Exodus 30:26-30; Exodus 40:9-11, and Compare Exodus 30:23-25.

tabernacle. Hebrew. mishkan. App-40.

sanctified = set them apart. Exodus 29:37; Exodus 30:29-30.

poured. Not touched with the finger, as in the case of the common priests, but profusely poured. See Psalms 133:2.

Aaron"s sons. These could not be invested till after Aaron. Compare John 17:19.

sweet savour = savour of satisfaction. See note on Leviticus 1:9, and Genesis 8:21.

the other ram. Mentioned in Leviticus 8:2. See Exodus 29:19-24.

slew. Same word as "killed", Leviticus 8:15, Leviticus 8:19.

put it: on ear, thumb, and toe, to point out the hearkening, the working, and the walking.

Verse 25

he took., Exodus 29:22-25.

the rump = the fat tail. See Leviticus 3:9. Compare Exodus 29:22.

Verse 26

a = one.

Verse 28

and upon. Some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, Targum of Onkelos, Lisbon Pentateuch (1491), The Targum of Jonathan ben Uzziel Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate, have this "and" in the text.

and. Many authorities have this "and" in the text.

Verse 31

door = entrance.

tabernacle = tent ("ohel). App-40.

as I commanded. Samaritan Pentateuch Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulg, read "as I have been commanded".

Verse 33

seven days. Aaron consecrated on the eighth day, after waiting seven days.

consecration = setting apart. consecrate. See note on Exodus 28:41.

Verse 34

He hath done = hath been done.

make an atonement. See note on Exodus 29:33.

Verse 36

the hand. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of the Cause) for what is performed by it (App-6). Hence a common idiom for instrumentality or agency; esp. writing.
