thou shalt speak. Aaron now to give the orders about the sacrifices.

appear: i.e. manifest Himself in a special manner.

Verse 5

tabernacle = tent. Hebrew. "ohel. App-40.

Verse 7

said unto Aaron. Showing that Aaron did not take this honour upon himself. Hebrews 5:4, Hebrews 5:5.

offer = prepare. Hebrew. "asah. App-43.

thy sin offering. Ancient Jewish interpretation refers this "calf" (Leviticus 9:8) to the sin of the golden calf. The People"s share in that sin is referred to in Leviticus 9:15. Compare Ex. Leviticus 32:35, "they made (Exodus 32:1) the calf which Aaron made" (Leviticus 9:4).

make an atonement. See note on Exodus 29:33. Compare Exodus 28:41.

offering. Hebrew. korban. App-43.

as = according as.

Verse 8

the calf. See note on Leviticus 9:7. Aaron slew this himself, like any other offerer, as it was for his own sin (Leviticus 1:5).

Verse 10

burnt: i.e. as incense. Hebrew. katar. App-43.

Verse 11

burnt. Hebrew. saraph. App-43.

Verse 12

presented = cause to be delivered. Hiphil of maz"a only here. verses: Leviticus 9:13, Leviticus 9:18, Leviticus 9:8. Job 34:11; Job 37:13. Zechariah 11:6.

Verse 15

the People"s offering. See note on Leviticus 9:7.

offered. Hebrew. chata (verb), to offer a sin offering. App-43.

as the first. See Leviticus 9:8. He accordingly burnt it "with out the camp", for which he was reproved by Moses (Leviticus 10:16-20).

Verse 16

manner = ordinance, or regulation. Compare the same word in Leviticus 5:10.

Verse 17

took an handful thereof. Hebrew filled his hand therefrom, i.e. installed himself therewith. Here we have the Divine explanation of consecration. Compare Exodus 28:41.

Verse 19

rump. Hebrew "the fat tail".

Verse 21

wave offering. See note on Exodus 29:27.

as Moses commanded. Some codices, with Samaritan Pentateuch, The Targum of Jonathan ben Uzziel and Septuagint, read "as Jehovah commanded Moses".

Verse 22

blessed them: i.e. according to the precept in Numbers 6:24-26. Compare Deuteronomy 10:8; Deuteronomy 21:5.

came down. Does not imply "steps", which were forbidden (Exodus 20:26). Probably = the margin or edge. See note on Exodus 27:5.

Verse 23

blessed the People. This joint blessing is given in the Chaldee version of the Pentateuch, thus: "May the word of Jehovah accept your sacrifice with favour, and remit and pardon your sins. "

glory of the LORD. According to the promise in Leviticus 9:4. See the Structure, p. 144.

Verse 24

came a fire. See note on Leviticus 10:2, and compare 1 Chronicles 21:26 and Genesis 4:4. Judges 6:20, Judges 6:21; 1 Kings 18:38. 2 Chronicles 7:1, 2 Chronicles 7:2. See Leviticus 6:13.

shouted. Compare 2 Chronicles 7:3.
