Title [Today’s Sermon] Problem Solver ‘Only Jesus’
Contents
John 2:1-11
Today's text is about Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. This miracle is the first miracle performed by Jesus in the Gospel of John. At the wedding feast, Jesus and his mother were invited to participate. However, there was a problem with the wedding feast. The wine has run out.
The feast is meaningless if there is no other food or wine in the banquet hall. For that reason, wine was an indispensable food at a feast in Israel. It was as expected. The joy of the feast was gone, and complaints and resentments were on the verge of arising.
When the wine runs out, Mary, the mother of Jesus, informs Jesus that “the wine has run out in this banquet house.” Mary was well aware that only Jesus could solve the problem of this banquet where the wine ran out. So he told Jesus, nobody else, that the wine had run out.
But Jesus said to Mary, “What does that have to do with me? The time is not yet.” If you can confirm that the other person's will is like this, many people will give up. But Maria does not give up. Mary believed in Jesus. He believed that only Jesus could solve the problem of this banquet house. Mary already knew and believed in the existence and power of Jesus. He calls the servants of the house and says, “Whatever Jesus says to you, do it.”
Faith is simple. It is to hold on to the word of God's promise to the end without being shaken under any circumstances. When we pray over a problem and our prayers are not answered right away, we immediately become disappointed and give up. But faith does not disappoint or give up. Faith holds on to the Word until the end and moves us forward. Faith is obedience to the end. “Whatever he says to you, do it.”
Jesus saw the faith of his mother Mary. Then he tells the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” The empty jar here is our own spiritual state. An empty jar can refer to a saint without life, a saint without the Holy Spirit, and a saint without the word of truth. Empty jars make a loud noise. It is fragile. Are you not an empty jar? Jesus says: “Fill empty jars with water!” The servants immediately filled the jar with water up to the mouth of Jesus without questioning or questioning what Jesus had said. True faith manifests itself in immediate obedience. If you have faith but your actions do not follow, your belief is false.
Jesus tells the servants to pour water from the jar and bring it to the banquet hall. The banquet hall will taste and admire the wine made from water. “Everyone puts out good wine first, and after they are drunk they serve the lowly, but you have kept good wine until now.”
The shortage of wine at the wedding banquet could be resolved because of Jesus, Mary, who believed and obeyed Jesus, and his servants. Faith in Jesus Christ is the key to solving many problems in life.
