Title: Do not gossip / John 6:41-46
Subject: Don't gossip / John 6:41-46
Among the novels of the famous American novelist Mark Twain, there is a famous work called [The Prince and the Beggar]. This book is more known as a children's fairy tale or cartoon than as a novel.
Among the contents, a prince named Edward happened to meet a child from a ghetto named Tom, who looked like him, and wanted to see the world, so he changed clothes with the child, and in an instant became a beggar, and he fell into slum life and abuse. . In the end, he regains the throne, but when he is seen outside the kingdom in the form of [Tom] in a beggar's clothes, no matter how much he is a prince, everyone sees him as a beggar [Tom] and not as a prince [Edward] and ridicules him. , beaten, and abused.
When the Lord of today's text also came into the world, took on a human body, and was Jesus of Nazareth, when he said that he was [the bread of life from heaven], we see that the Jews ridiculed him.
I hope that this time will be a valuable opportunity to see and believe in the true image of the Lord while carefully examining the text of this time.
1. Don't gossip
1) Meaning of gossip
The Bible records that the Jews grumbled when Jesus called Himself the [Bread of Life] who came from heaven. The word gossip is using the word [ ].
This word means [whisper] [murmur] in onomatopoeia.
① Meaning [to resent]
*When the owner of the vineyard gave wages, those who came first complained
Matthew 20:11 After receiving it, he grumbled against the owner of the house and said,
* Among Israel in the Old Testament wilderness
1 Corinthians 10:10 Some of them grumbled, and perished by the destroyer.
Do not grumble like us.
Numbers 14:27 How long shall I endure this wicked congregation that murmurs against me?
I have heard the murmuring of the children of Israel against me.
Although they were released from slavery, they complained that there was no water when they were thirsty; when they ran out of food they complained about food; if they wanted meat, they complained that there was no meat; they complained when they heard negative reports about the land of Canaan. They were in the middle, but because of what they saw in front of them, [murmuring] was ahead of their faith. It was a complaint based on disbelief and disobedience.
② In the sense of [slander]
Luke 5:30 The Pharisees and their scribes slandered the disciples, saying,
Why do you eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
③ In the sense of [gossip]
John 7:12 They say of Jesus that he is a great gossip in the crowd, or that he is a good man.
Or not, one that deceives the crowd
** The meaning in the text is [to grumble] or [to ridicule] in unbelief.
It can also be viewed in the same sense as the Jews at the time of Moses when they left Egypt.
2) Knowing the Lord's parents
The Jews say this in the sense of disbelief and ridicule of the word of the Lord.
John 6:42 And he said, Isn't this Jesus the son of Joseph?
How can I say that I came down from heaven now?
[Isn't this the son of Joseph?] Isn't this the very Nazarene, the carpenter's son?
[We know his parents] Are not his brothers among us?
Matthew 13:55 Isn't this the carpenter's son, his mother Mary, and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?
Matthew 13:56 Aren't all their sisters with us?
Where then did all these things of this man come from?
We all know your origin, education and background, how can you say that you came from heaven?
The Jews' [gossip] came out of this unbelief and ridicule.
3) The opposition between God's signs and human worldly interests
Through the proclamation of the gospel following the miracle of Sixty, the Jews were clearly given numerous signs and evidences, but they did not see Jesus Christ as the [Messiah], Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph the Carpenter, James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas. It is understood as the brother of
4) Don't gossip
To these Jews, the Lord said, [Do not gossip with one another].
Jesus was clearly gossipers with slander, ridicule, and unbelief against Him, but without using any means of personal defense, He points out their unbelief by restating the heavenly evidence.
John 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.
I will raise him up on the last day.
This word is from 6:37,39, and it is saying that your gossip is not because you know me as a human being, but because they are not led by God.
*** Our response to the gossipers ***
Even today we see gossips directed at believers.
the bible points to this
1 Corinthians 1:23 We preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles
1 Corinthians 1:24 But to those who are called
Jew and Greek, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.
2:14 The natural man does not receive the works of the Spirit of God.
They seem foolish to them, and they do not understand
These things are spiritually discerned.
2. Only God's leading leads to the Lord.
Rather, the Lord
John 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him...
It speaks of God's leading.
God's leading is using the word [fyokuo]. This means that the fisherman pulls out a net full of fish, which means that he catches everything without missing a single thing, which means to lead by force.
1) This guidance has [predestination meaning].
Only the guidance of God can lead us to the path of salvation.
Those who do not refuse to come to the light because they become slaves to sin are forced by God to lead them into the light. It's more specific than simply getting [attention].
2) This guidance is
It also applies to the physical [event].
So it also applies to specific life events.
Augustine was a famous Latin father of the early church, but before the startling incident at the age of 32, Augustine was a sexual slave, a cultist, and the object of her mother's prayers.
One day, when I was weeping with deep sorrow and passion in the garden,
When I heard the sound of [pick up and read] [pick up and read] in my ear, and went into the room and picked up the books of the apostles,
Romans 13:13 Walk modestly as in the daytime
Do not dissipate or get drunk, do not engage in sexual immorality or sensuality, do not quarrel or envy
Romans 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not seek the lusts of the flesh
He confesses in his confession that when he reads the words, the light of salvation enters his heart, and all the shadows of doubt are removed.
3) This leading is also expressed as the [work] of the Holy Spirit.
It is the Holy Spirit that makes man humble, hearken, obedient, self-denying and accepting of Christ.
*The Holy Spirit opened Lydia's heart.
Acts 16:14 I heard a woman named Lydia, a frequent merchant in the city of Thyatira, who honored God. The Lord had opened her heart to obey Paul.
*** conclusion ***
1. Let's not become gossips
The reason for the gossip comes from resentment and slander that come from unbelief and disobedience.
The reason to gossip comes from looking at the world instead of looking at the things above.
The Lord said not to gossip.
Let us be the faith that looks to the things above.
Colossians 3:2 Think of the things above, not the things of the earth
2. Let's remember that God's leading works out salvation.
predestined, intervening by the Holy Spirit in concrete life events,
Let's not forget the grace that leads us to salvation.
144:3 What is man, O LORD, that you know him?
What is life, do you think of me?
Hebrews 2:6 But who testified where, saying,
What is man, that you think of him, and what is the Son of man, that you counsel him?
