Title: Don't Sin
1 John 2:1-2 Do not sin
My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, who is the propitiation for our sins, and not only for us, but also for the whole world. for the sins of God (1 John 2:1-2).
<sermon>
It would be wrong to take it for granted that human beings are weak creatures who have no choice but to commit sins. Of course, believers are bound to sin. But it is true that it is something that should not be sinned. So, how are these two related? Even though we are beings who have no choice but to commit sins, we must realize that human beings cannot solve their sins on their own in the words of not to sin. After all, the fact that humans have no choice but to sin also means that they cannot live apart from the Lord.
However, what is clear is that the words “so that they do not commit sins” cannot be taken lightly and overlooked. Because in any case, the believer is a being who should not sin.
Look at the text again, “My children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. not only for the sake of the world, but also for the sins of the whole world” (verses 1-2).
To understand the meaning of the word not to sin, we must first understand what sin is. Because if we don't know what sin is, we will forget the essence of sin and try to fix only the outward behavior.
There are various explanations for what sin is, but it is necessary to find its meaning in the event of Adam and Eve, which can be said to be the beginning of sin in this world.
Modern society considers sin to be an action that is against ethics and morals. However, it cannot be said that Adam and Eve's eating of the forbidden fruit was against ethics and morals. However, considering that their actions resulted in the death of mankind, it is clear that the first human beings to eat of the forbidden fruit was a great sin that caused mankind to die.
Then what was their evil? Simply put, it was disobedience to God's Word. You ate the fruit you were told not to eat. So, if we do not disobey God, will we not sin? Yes. If you do not disobey, you do not sin. But who can live without disobedience to God?
Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit because they were controlled by greed. Therefore, disobedience to the Word is the result of humans being dominated by greed. If we think of this in the opposite way, not committing sins can be understood as meaning to live as one who is governed by the word of truth.
The Apostle John mentioned the problem of communion with God in Chapter 1. A communion with God is possible only when the truth is in me. When the truth is in me, I realize my injustice, and to know God's love and grace is to be governed by the truth.
The problem, however, is that modern people are not very interested in the truth. We only care about what we want to do, but we close our hearts to the fact that there are things that God wants us to do. In doing so, he deceives himself into thinking that he is living independently of sin.
Sin is anything I do out of my greed. There is nothing to think of God. Naturally, God doesn't even think about what He wants me to do. Living as if God does not exist. This is a life of sin.
To not sin means to be in a right relationship with God. But this relationship is not built on our works and righteousness. It is a relationship established through the righteousness of Christ, the propitiation sacrifice. Therefore, thinking of the Lord's righteousness, exalting the Lord's merit, and giving thanks is to be in a right relationship with God and to live as a person who does not commit sins.
But our greed always keeps us from giving up. The desire to exalt my name and my merits rather than to exalt the Lord is not abandoned. Every time we see ourselves like this, we discover the right to place our hearts on Christ again.
Do not take sin lightly. Just because Jesus died for all our sins, you shouldn't assume that I have nothing to do with sin. Realizing that my sins are still persecuting Jesus, there must be a confession like the Apostle Paul, 'I am the chief of sinners'.
Chapter 1 is to keep God's people from sinning. However, in Chapter 1, there is no mention of what to do or what not to do. Therefore, it can be said that sin is a relational problem, not an action problem.
The problem with modern believers is that they judge their faith as external. who committed the crime of not having religious practices
It is to be used as a criterion for classifying what is not violated. They even do not hesitate to say that if you do not evangelize, you will be sinning. It is creating words that are not in the Bible. Since evangelism is essential for church revival, what is essential is to intervene in the problem of sin in order to make church members zealous. It is an idea to increase the value of evangelism by saying that if you do not evangelize, you are committing a sin, and to induce the act to do evangelism.
The purpose of the preacher is not to get the believer to do something, but to lead all souls to Christ. Therefore, there is only one purpose in all preaching. It is to help us come to Christ, who is our life. This is the preacher's job. But greed for the church is hindering this. In the end, preaching only leads to sin.
You think of God's will in whatever you do. Put yourself in a right relationship with God. If you nevertheless sin, look to your Advocate, Jesus Christ. Christ is the solver of your sins.
