1. This is a lesson that the ‘dark night of the soul’ is waiting for the saints’ journey.
In John 16:32, Jesus prophesied that the night road of the soul was waiting for him and his disciples earlier. “Behold, the hour is coming, and the hour has come, when each of you will be scattered to his own place and leave me alone. But I am not alone, but the Father is with me.” After Jesus' death, the disciples of Jesus were scattered, each giving up all their hopes and expectations of faith. In Luke 24:18 that follows today's text, it is recorded that the name of one of these disciples was Clopas. According to church tradition, Clopas was the brother of Joseph, the father of Jesus, and the other was his son Simeon, who became the second bishop of the Jerusalem church after his servant James. Although these two men were not among the 12 disciples, they were important early church leaders. However, after the death of Jesus, these two disciples were moving heavy steps, leaving all hope behind. In verse 17 of the text, it is recorded that they had to stop walking with a ‘sad light’ on their faces. All motivation was lost.
