Sermons for Preaching

Title: Ephesians 04:1-6

Content A good church is ① an evangelical church ② a holy church ③ a universal church ④ a unified church. I hope that we will be able to glorify God as a united figure until our Lord comes.

1. Why does the church need to become one?

1) God likes to be united.

As the Father of all, God is above all, unifying all, and in all (Ephesians 4:6; Psalm 133).

2) The purpose of Jesus' coming was to unite us.

The purpose of Jesus coming to this earth was to reconcile us, who were enemies with God, to God through the blood that He shed on the cross, and to create a new person between us in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:13-18).

3) He wanted the will of the Holy Spirit to become one.

Ephesians 4:3 says, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

4) To be one is worthy of the calling with which we are called.

Here, the word 'appropriate' means 'suitable' or 'become like a saint' and has the meaning of 'suitable for a saint' or 'like a saint'. It also has the meaning of 'to harmonize' or 'to balance'. When we become one, it is like a saint and a church.

5) The object of our faith is one.

“There is one body, and one Spirit… As the saying goes, the body, the Holy Spirit, the hope, the Lord, the faith, the baptism, and God are one. Therefore, it is right for us to become one.

2. How to become one?

“… Make every effort to keep the unity of the Holy Spirit.”

1) We must be humble to become one.

If you are arrogant and proud, you cannot become one. In the world, humility is considered to be humiliating, lowly, weak, and crouching, and it is thought that slaves and lowly people do it. But in Christianity, the most beautiful virtue is humility.

Jesus, whom we believe in, was the most humble. “… He emptied himself and took on the form of a servant... ” And he did not come into this world to be served, but rather to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45; Matthew 20:28).

And Jesus Himself said, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble." Also, Augustine said, “The virtues of Christianity are first humility, second humility, and third humility.”

Kurosagi, a Japanese biblical commentator, said, “Humility is an attitude of not demanding to be treated in line with one’s values and not caring about being treated less than that.” The only way to become one is to have the humility to regard others as superior to yourself.

2) You must be gentle to become one.

Stiff can't be one. Meekness is the Greek word for praotes (πραοτηδ), which refers to a wild animal that has been tamed to obey its master. It refers to being powerful and strong, but being controlled by the master's guidance. When it is soft, it can be one, and when it is stiff, it can never be one.

3) You have to be patient to become one.

This is macrothumia (Μακροθυμια), which means ‘a spirit that never yields’ and ‘a spirit that does not take revenge even though it has the power to take revenge. Even if something upsets you, you can become one with patience.

4) We become one when we accept each other in love.

There are all kinds of people in the church. We have to embrace all kinds of different people. To forgive means to forgive, to embrace. You have to have broad generosity to embrace it.

5) He told us to do our best to keep the unity of the Holy Spirit in the bond of peace.

It doesn't come naturally. You have to work hard to become one. You have to make an effort.

3. What is the unified result?

There is nothing that cannot be done when there is only one church. If we unite our hearts, we unite our will, and we unite our strength, we can accomplish any great thing.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us walk worthy of the calling with which we have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love, and striving to keep the unity of the Holy Spirit in the bond of peace.
