Title: Jesus' Happiness Theory (4)
Text: Matthew 5:6
Date: 2012. 6. 10. Sunday Day Worship
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.”
★ Let's take some time to think about the fourth happiness that Jesus spoke of.
1. Who is truly happy?
Jesus said that “those who hunger and thirst for righteousness” are happy people (Matthew 5:6). There are various theories about what the "righteousness" that blessed people long for is. There are claims of justification, claims of eschatological salvation, and claims that the word righteousness (Greek-dika oshne) is never used in that sense in the Gospel of Matthew. Commentary Hokma writes that "it is more appropriate to understand it as meaning both personal and personal righteousness and, in the broadest sense, social justice".
★ said John MacArthur. “‘Dikaiosuna’ in Greek, meaning righteousness or justification, means right relationship with God. The only true happiness in life is having a right relationship with God. It refers to two things. Salvation and justification. Sanctification is that." Hermann Liedelboss said. “It (hunger and thirst for righteousness) is God’s desire as king, the righteousness that puts an end to all unrighteous powers and lies and does justice to the oppressors.”
★ What was the world like in the days of the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 5:23)? “They justify the wicked by a bribe, and take away their justice from the righteous.” The powerful committed injustice, and with that power they stopped justice. The power given to them was only a tool to satisfy their greed. As the defector Ji Kang-heon said, 'not guilty, not guilty'. This is a characteristic of an unjust society.
★ God is just and fair (Isaiah 5:16). We believe that the day will come when justice will be fully realized by God at the end of the day. Until that day comes, we must strive to become an imperfect but just society. So, is a perfectly just society possible? impossible. But why should we strive for a just society? To live in the world as people of a perfectly just nation to come, to show that the nation exists and that it will come.
★ The American Bible Society, founded in 1816, had two goals. It was to preach the word of God and to end slavery. Even after the end of slavery, racism continued. However, through the faithful Christians in America at the time, it was known who God was. It also showed what the kingdom of God would be like in the future. That is why we must live justly in the world.
2. What blessings do those who hunger and thirst for righteousness receive?
Jesus promised to be “satisfied” to those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6). The craving for righteousness was described as "hungry and thirst", and the satisfaction of that hunger was described as "satisfied." Fully satisfied means fully satisfied. A state in which a hungry animal has eaten enough to eat no more.
★ The Bible promises 'satisfaction' (satisfaction). “The young lion will be in need and hunger, but he who seeks the Lord will lack nothing” (Psalm 34:10). “He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry with good things” (Psalm 107:9). “I will satisfy the hearts of the priests with oil, and I will satisfy my people with my blessing, saith the LORD” (Jeremiah 31:14). “Whoever drinks the water that I will give him will never thirst. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water springing up to eternal life” (John 4:14). "Jesus said, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst" (John 6:35).
★ What are the important characteristics found in the Bible verses listed above? There are at least two characteristics. One is that the time of fullness will come, and the other is that that time will come by God. There is no just power in the world. Injustice grows as much as partial justice is realized. All power corrupts. The time will come when full justice will be realized. the bible says "Look and yearn for the coming of the day of God. On that day the heavens will be burned and dissolved, and the elements will be melted with scorching fire, but just as he promised, we look forward to new heavens and new earth, where there is righteousness." (2 Peter 3:12-13).
