Faith without works/James 1:22-2;14
Key Verse: “Be ye doers of the way, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22).
Word: It is easy to make this kind of error in our life of faith. Because I have already been saved, my actions do not reflect much. However, the Bible speaks in a strong tone about the believer's morals and life.
The book of James is a letter that James wrote to the twelve tribes of the brothers. James describes the life of the saints in this letter. In particular, it deals with the integration of faith and works. Church leaders at that time formally understood Paul's teachings, teaching and arguing. Piety was lost and the poor were ignored. James tells us to overcome temptations, be slow to anger, and not judge people by their outward appearance. He also urges us to be careful with our words, not to swear and to pray. In particular, it explains the meaning of poverty and wealth.
James said, “Do not be merely hearers and deceive yourself, but practice the word” (1:22). to keep it unstained from the world” (1:27). It also tells us not to discriminate against the poor by taking people for their looks. It warns that even if you keep all the commandments, if you break one thing, you will break the whole commandment and be punished (2:10). It defines that faith alone does not lead to a right relationship with God, but action must follow.
Then how should we live our faith? First of all, you must listen to the Word of God and believe it. You cannot simply read the Bible and follow a piece of knowledge to comprehend it in your head. A sound interpretation is required. If misinterpreted, it can lead to what is commonly referred to as a heretical mindset.
Next, we must strive to keep our faith. From time to time we are tested. I can't overcome this, and I'm heartbroken and discouraged. But James tells us not to say that we are tempted by God when we are tempted. We are tempted because we are drawn and deceived by our own greed. Greed begets sin, and this sin leads to death. We must pray for wisdom from God, who is patient and not reproachful, and gives us all things generously. Finally, we must act like James' counsel. The supreme law given in the Bible is, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Just as the body without the soul is dead, so faith without action is dead faith.
Prayer: After hearing God's Word, I read it and made up my mind only in my heart. But from now on, help me to obey your word and show it in action. I pray in Jesus name. Amen.
