I think the poem in today's text was written when 185,000 Assyrian troops came to attack Jerusalem and were killed. The people of Israel experienced a great victory without doing anything. Most importantly, the Assyrian army completely destroyed Samaria, but was unable to cross the Jerusalem wall. What is the reason? Until then, Jerusalem was the true temple of God. There were the words of God and tears of repentance. God has shown that the living temple of God cannot be violated by any power in this world.
The poet praises God for the victory. If so, what should we praise?
1. We must praise the greatness of the Lord's name (verse 1).
In verse 1, the psalmist exclaims, “The Lord’s fame is exalted in Israel.” God defeated the enemies of Israel. So he made his name known to Judah. God also placed the tent in Zion. There, He heard the prayers of the people and answered them to victory. Therefore, this victory exalted the name of God.
2. We must praise the majesty of the Lord (verses 4-5).
Verse 4 says, “The glory of the Lord is greater than those mountains, whose splendor and splendor are abundant for hunting.” In front of the plundering nations, God reveals his dignity with a majesty that no human can interfere. At this time, the enemies of Israel, even the strong ones, will be plundered and helpless, and sinners will sleep (verse 5). Our enemies have no power whatsoever. If the Lord is angry, who can stand before him?
3. We must praise the greatness of the Lord's power (verses 10-12).
Great is the power of God to turn sorrow into song and murmuring into praise (verse 10). Because God has great power to break haughty princes like matchsticks, and to make all kingdoms belong to Christ (verse 12). ). Therefore, human beings should fear and worship the God of this power (verse 11).
The reason why the saints will not become discouraged when they suffer is because God's name, majesty, and power are exceedingly great. Therefore, we should always praise the Lord who gives us victory.
