Old Testament
4 The Sovereign LORD has given me the tongue of scholars, that I may know how to help the afflicted with words; He wakes me up every morning; He awakens my ear to understand like the scholars.
5 The Sovereign LORD has opened my ear, and I do not rebel nor turn back.
6 I gave my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from insults and spitting.
7 I know that I will not be put to shame, because the Sovereign LORD helps me; I am not ashamed; I have made my face like flint.
8 The one who justifies me is near. Who can contend with me? Stand with me. Who is my adversary? Come near to me.
9 Behold, the Sovereign LORD will help me, and who can condemn me? Behold, they will all wear out like clothes, and moths will eat them.
new testament
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.
6 Although he was in the form of God, he did not consider equality with God to be robbery
7 Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of a cross.
9 For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name.
10 At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, they in heaven and on earth and under the earth.
11 Every tongue has confessed that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
sermon
1. Because he is humble.
Verse 6 “He is the original God… “Jesus Christ existed before the whole world was created, and He is equal with God. But he humbledly became a man in obedience to the Father's will to save all mankind from sin.
2. Because he gave himself for the needs of others.
Verse 8 “… He became obedient to the point of death, even the death of a cross.” Crucifixion was a method of death that began in the Assyrian times. Even in Roman times, it was a cruel tool of execution used to kill heinous prisoners. Jesus died on the cross for all mankind.
3. Because he was resurrected.
Verse 9 “For this reason God highly exalted him… ” God set apart his glory and privilege and raised from the grave Jesus Christ, who became a man and obeyed the will of the Father even to the point of death on a cross. He highly exalted him.
When the Lord comes again, every knee will bow before Jesus, and every tongue will call him Lord. Those who believe in the Lord will worship Him with love and reverence, but those who do not believe will yield to the undeniable fact that Christ is Lord of all, though unwillingly.
