Title: I Go Fishing

Content John 21:1-3

The resurrected Jesus to Mary Magdalene in front of the empty tomb early on Sunday morning to convince His beloved disciples (Mark 16:9-11), and women except Mary Magdalene near the tomb in the garden early on Sunday morning (Matthew 28:9) -11) Around noon on Sunday, the two anonymous disciples of Emmaus (Luke 24:13-32) appeared to the eleven disciples (John 20:1-33) in the upper room of Mark on Sunday evening (Luke 24:34) in one place in Jerusalem during the daytime. One morning, he appeared to the seven disciples on the Sea of Galilee (John 21:33) the seventh time.

This is why Peter even cursed at the house of Caiaphas the high priest because he did not know Jesus. (Matthew 26:74) However, Jesus came to Peter after resurrecting him and restored his mission to Peter.

Even though we claim to be followers of Jesus, we are weak creatures who stumble and fail as often as Peter. However, we must overcome failure and restore our mission.

First, Simon Peter was originally a fisherman.

As they were walking along the shores of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting their nets into the sea, and he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:18-19) )

They left their nets and followed Jesus, and Jesus gave them the mission to catch people. However, Peter was a resurrected person who had met the resurrected Lord several times (Luke 24:34, 1 Corinthians 15:5).

When he appeared to the disciples that night (John 20:19-25), a week later, when he appeared to the eleven (John 20:26-29), Peter joined in, but Peter said, “I am going fishing.”

At this time, the other disciples also followed. Commentators view this verse in three ways.

1. I think the disciples gave up their mission as fishers of people and returned to their former workplace (Mc Douell)

2. While the disciples were waiting for the Lord to appear in Galilee (Matthew 26:32, Mark 16:7), I think they went out to catch fish in boredom and leisure.

3. The view that the disciples did not give up on their mission as apostles, but that the Lord went out to fish because the need to earn a living was due to the interruption of the women's banquet (Luke 8:2-3) during the period of his communion. (ReynoLds)

It may be related to the fact that before Jesus died, they had enough to provide for their own needs and remained to help and give to the poor (John 13:29), but now it is not.

The second fish was not caught (verse 3).

As it is in the present-day Sea of Galilee, the night was also a good time to catch fish (Nu 5:1-2).

The disciples stayed up all night to catch fish until dawn, but when they were frustrated because they couldn't catch any fish, they did not recognize Jesus standing on the beach. Because it was still early in the morning.

It was the same Jesus who thought he was a wanderer, but who said that he would appear in Galilee. (Mark 16:7) Jesus asked if there was any meat, and he answered, "No."

Jesus said, “Cast your net on the right side of the boat, and you will find it.” So the disciples threw it, but they could not lift the net because there were too many fish. This is the result of obedience to the Word. What do you think is the reason for our failure in the life of faith? It is our pride. (Proverbs 16:8, 1 Corinthians 10:12) Therefore, obedience is the only way to restore our faith and mission. We must return to the pure attitude we had when we first met the Lord.

Third, we must not lose our passion (verse 7).

The disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” Simon Peter was naked, and when he heard the word, “Lord,” he put on his outer garment and jumped into the sea. Rather, I was burned with a desire to meet the Lord first. It is a heart that loves the Lord passionately.

Dear saints, even if you lose everything in this world, you must not lose your passion for Jesus. No matter how bitter our failures, let's not lose our passionate love and passion for the Lord. If we lose this, we cannot recover our faith, our mission, or anything.

Conclusion Jesus came to Peter, who had denied Jesus and even cursed, and restored his mission. No matter how difficult or difficult it may be, let's not give up on our mission and obey the Word to love Jesus more passionately than before.
