Title: It is finished / John 19:30
Contents
I. This is one of Jesus' last words.
His first words on the cross were a prayer of forgiveness to his enemies. In Luke 23:34, it was said, “Lord, forgive us.”
The second verse was the proclamation of salvation to the thief while he was dying. Luke 23:43 says, “Truly, truly, I say to you, today you are with me in paradise.”
The third verse is the last word of filial piety to his mother and disciple who stood by the cross, the place of his death. John 19:26 says [...Woman, behold, your son...].
The fourth word was a cry of agony to God the Father.
Matthew 27:46 says, “Eli, Eli, Namasabachthani, my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
The fifth verse spoke of his perfect humanity before the crowd. In John 19:28, it says [...I am thirsty].
The sixth word was a declaration to his people, [I have finished] (John 19:30).
And the seventh and last words were words of satisfaction to the father. Luke 23:46 says, “Father, into your hands I commit my soul.”
II. The word “completed” has a feminine (feminine) meaning
It is finished!
This word is tetelestai ( ) from the root of teroo ( ), and it is an emphatic form of meaning 'to finish completely at once'. This word is used in several places in the New Testament.
First, it is written in the sense of 'finished'. This is the case of [Jesus finished commanding the twelve disciples...] in Matthew 11:1. This meant that the lesson to the disciples in the preceding chapter (Matthew 10) had been completed.
Second, 'to pay' (payment) is written in the meaning. This is the case in Matthew 17:24 where [...those who received half a shekel came to Peter, and your teacher did not pay half a shekel]. This phrase was used when we were talking about 'paying' temple taxes. After that, Jesus paid the half shekel of the temple tax, which was his portion (Matthew 17:27).
Third, it was written in the meaning of 'fill'. This is the case where Luke 2:39 says [...they completed all things according to the law of the Lord...]. This verse refers to the case in which Jesus went up to Jerusalem and finished all the ordinances when the day came when he was to perform baptism according to the law of Moses.
Fourth, it was written in the meaning of 'I will answer'. This is the case in John 18:32 [so that what Jesus said concerning the kind of death that he was about to die might be fulfilled]. This refers to the fulfillment of Jesus' death on the cross according to the law and prophecy.
In the fifth text, 'It is finished' (19:30).
Putting these scriptures together, we can see the scope, content, and essence of Jesus' sixth words on the cross.
'Finished', 'I paid all (payment)', 'I have finished', 'I have accepted everything', and 'I have finished' are the same words. It means the same thing.
What are you done? It means that our sins and guilt are finished.
What has been written? It means that everything has been completed according to the requirements of God's law.
What has been answered? It means that everything that the Father told Jesus to do has been fulfilled.
What has been done? It means that the atonement of mankind has been fulfilled, and that it has been consummated.
Two or three repetitions refer to a single end that cannot be repeated. It means completion, completion.
Ⅲ. What is the overall meaning of these words?
It becomes the word that declares the victory in the fulfillment of redemption.
In the end, Jesus cried out and died (Matthew 27:50, Mark 15:39, Luke 23:46).
Perhaps one of the contents of that loud voice was Jesus' final cry, 'It is finished'. He fell into a deep sense of defeat and did not say 'it is finished'.
In the joy of the triumphal general who had won the victory, Jesus loudly declared that I had accomplished it. He had full control of every victory at the end of the cross.
Then this declaration of victory is
1. It is a declaration that the wages (price) for sin, which is a requirement of the law required for God's justice, have been completely paid for sinful mankind at once. If so, it is a law-fulfilling dog. For he did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it.
2. It is also a declaration (gae) of the fulfillment of prophecy.
The central task of prophecy that was put in the hearts and mouths of the prophets of the Old Testament was that Jesus would come into the world as the Messiah, suffer on the cross, and die. Then, Jesus' declaration of victory that it has been accomplished is the opening of all prophecies to be fulfilled. This was what Jesus discussed with Moses and Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration (Luke 9:30-31).
3. And these words are a declaration of the fulfillment of the Atonement.
It says that Jesus Himself completely paid the full price for human sin, death. It means that the debt of sin was paid off completely and forever. A really expensive ransom paid. The price was the precious blood of Christ, like a lamb without blemish and without spot (1 Peter 1:18-19). Then this is the dog of the fulfillment of atonement. Now that he has made this declaration, the great battle is over. The wages of sin have been paid. And God's justice was satisfied. And we were set free from the sins and laws of mankind. A new person of salvation has made a new start for every spirit in Jesus.
All done! It is the victory of the great God. And it is a declaration of victory. It was a glorious declaration of victory.
IV. What is the concluding lesson of this verse?
This is the lesson that Jesus fulfilled all the 'will of God' and 'God's economy' when he came into this world.
It represents the fulfillment of the purpose of Jesus' earthly life. He emphasized that the purpose of coming into the world was to accomplish the will of the Father who sent me (John 6:26, 29, 38). In his final prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, he said, 'I have done all that the Father gave me to do, and I have glorified the Father.' Before the cross, he repeated, 'Not my will, but your will' (Matthew 26:39, 42).
He said that the salvation of mankind through the cross was ordained by God in advance (Luke 22:22). That is why he said that he was going to carry the cross to accomplish the will of God.
While preaching under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Peter said, 'He was delivered according to the divine will and foreknowledge' (Acts 2:23). So Jesus clearly said [the Son of Man goes as it is written about him]. [Today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, I must go on my way, and a prophet shall not die outside Jerusalem] (Luke 13:33).
Then, when he said 'I am finished' on the cross, it becomes clear that he has fulfilled the will of God who sent me into this world.
It is the fact that God's will was accomplished through the suffering of death called the cross.
Dear saints!
Now we all have a new historical era called 1999. All the things, the whole world, all the inhabitants of the earth, and all the things in the general history of creation that occurred within 1999 are not accidental, but are included in God's ordained will (Acts 2:23, 4:28). And God's management (plan) will stand forever (Psalm 33:11), and His management (plan) will proceed without fail (Isaiah 46:11). To this end, God will continue to rotate and orbit the earth by His power, and He will become the King who rules over the entire creation.
This self-reign of general history will be used as a means to advance the salvation of believers who are looking for the lost descendants of Abraham (the missionary movement) and the establishment of the kingdom of Christ (the church movement).
The Lord will invite people from all nations, tongues, and tribes to join in this marvelous process of redemption.
Then, the theme of our prayer and life as we receive the new year becomes clear. That is to say, let it be a year in which the will of the Lord is accomplished. What is the Lord's will for our tendencies? This is a 3·3·3 exercise for personal command. This is a pioneering church movement. A seminary movement for spiritual leaders of the 21st century. This is the world missionary movement we received. This is a school evangelization movement. this
It is a social welfare movement that loves to laugh. It is a good use of the Christian cultural movement.
This is the new temple construction completion campaign we received for the center of the 7 Great Gospel Movement.
So let us do your will! Received the new year's motto.
In this world, the will of the Lord is accomplished only by carrying the cross. So Jesus took up the cross on the cross and said that I am finished. On the cross, blood and water were poured out, and while I was thirsty, I declared a great victory, that is, I am finished.
The life Jesus lived in the world for 33 years was 'a life that fulfills God's will'. This was the clear and clear purpose of the Lord's reign.
This is the purpose of our Christian life. Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it for the Lord. If we live, we live for the Lord; if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord's! (Romans 14:8).
Christians live in the world to do the Lord's will. Therefore, our natural prayer, may your will be done! is to do The only secret to accomplishing the Lord's will is to take up one's cross.
Only those who carry their cross can understand the will of the Lord, and only those who take up their cross can accomplish the will of the Lord.
This is the truth of the wheat, that is, the truth of the cross, that life comes from passing through death and the fruit of glory comes through self-sacrifice (John 12:24). Wishing you a new year in which the will of the Lord is fulfilled - Hallelujah -
