Review: Fear
He met God and was afraid.
What is the content of that fear? / "I didn't know". (verse 16)
1. What did you not know?
① I did not know that God was here. / I thought I was alone.
② I did not know that this place was the temple of God. / A place to meet God,
③ I did not know that this place was the gate of heaven. / A place to receive God's grace and blessings.
2. Where is that?
This place, where they are lying now, is that the beans are just like that.
A place where there was no one in the empty fields, and I was lost in loneliness and fear, where I did not know where to go. Even in the evening, there was no place to rest, so I made a bed with a stone and slept with my wrinkled body fastened with a collar. This is the temple of God, the heaven. is the door of
Worship in the Wilderness (18-19)
Jacob worships as much as he can.
He took the stone he had made for a pillow, made it a pillar, poured oil on it, built an altar, and offered worship. All that Jacob possessed was offered on this altar.
Worship to God is that way.
Once he knew that God was with me, Jacob offered everything he had to worship.
The name of that place was called Bethel. Bethel means house of God, and Dous means 'onewn tree'.
The vow in the wilderness (20-22)
The vow is to do this.
A vow is made after giving all of one's things to God.
① God is with me on my way and keeps me...
② He gave me food to eat and clothes to wear...
③ If you let me return to my father's house in peace...
You don't know how simple and humble you have become.
Those who spend the night alone in the wilderness become so humble.
And we come to realize that this is the life that God keeps.
The contents of the vow to value...
④ God will be my God...
⑤ The stone I set up as a pillar will be the house of God...
⑥ Of all things, I will surely give a tenth to God. / This is a confession of faith.
No compromise or deal,
This is a confession of faith along with an earnest wish.
1. The God who leads the way of Jacob! (Verses 1-14)
(1) God's answer is revealed by guiding the situation (1-12).
Jacob gets up and walks eastward and eastward toward Haran.
It is a long way from Haran to Bethel... (About 560km / Seoul-Busan)
As there are no special records, it seems that he came through the grace of God. In this way, the life of receiving God's promises is prosperous.
At the well where he sits first to rest, he meets shepherds who know him well, and learns that the next woman is Rachel, his daughter.
With joy, Jacob opened the stone, drew water from the well, watered the sheep, kissed him and wept aloud, announcing that he was his aunt's son.
How can a man cry out loud just because he met his cousin sister? Perhaps Jacob fell in love with Rachel at first sight when he met Rachel. I think she cried because she thought of her mother, Rebekah too...
When a man cries in front of a woman, what is suspicious?
This is because a man never sheds tears to a person who does not open his heart to love.
Example) I watched a little bit about hospice on TV, where a woman, despite her deathly ailment, continued to look out for and comfort someone more seriously ill than herself, to clean up all her surroundings, and take care of herself. He wrote down his life history, put it in the wardrobe, and said to the husband, "I'm sorry to go first," and went away so peacefully, but his father-in-law buried his face in his mother's arms and wept...
Apatten Here, through God's providential meeting, Jacob and Rachel fall in love with each other.
=> The lesson we need to learn here is that God's guidance is not always shown as a supernatural work, but naturally guides us in our lives. Or, through people or situations, it is to guide them so that they can walk on the path God has prepared naturally. Therefore, a person who prays to God is sensitively seeking and looking for God's guidance in all circumstances.
(2) Truly you are my bone and flesh! (verses 13-14)
Now, Rachel, who has met Jacob, is startled and runs to her father and tells her, and Laban, the father, runs out quickly and the reunion between Jacob and Laban is established. Laban kisses and hugs him and leads him into the house. And you will hear the past self-inflicted bells and whistles. Then Laban's words were, "Truly you are my bone and flesh!"
He felt that Jacob's personality was similar to that of his maternal uncle Laban. In other words, it is a sign that Jacob's actions were pleasing to Laban.
We have seen in the past Laban's agile and flattering disposition when Abraham's old servant went to seek a wife for Isaac.
That it is flattery and his character, we will learn more clearly later in his relationship with his nephew Jacob.
We can see here that Jacob did not inherit the traits of his father Isaac, but inherited the traits of his maternal uncle Laban. However, Esau rather inherited the physical traits of his father Isaac. However, the spiritual trait was inherited by Jacob.
Now that we have met similarly violent and robbing personalities, we can notice some unsavory signs.
In the end, following these concerns, Laban tried to use Jacob to make a fortune, and gave his two daughters to his nephew in return for 14 years of free labor. In other words, he sold his daughter.
And in the last seven years, he changed the price ten times, trying to keep his property from being passed on to Jacob by any means.
In order not to be taken away from Jacob's hard work, Jacob uses all means and methods to take away his wealth.
In the process, misunderstandings arose between the cousins, and in the end Jacob ran away with his wives, and his maternal uncle came after him with a sword.
What unfortunate situation is this?
Therefore, it is better for people to be more beautiful when parting than when meeting. It is important to create a relationship where you can meet with joy whenever you meet again.
Ex) I was deceived by these words of Mr. Yoo-jong, who lived with me for a month... In the end, I couldn't stop drinking even though I knew it, so I ended up living in hiding because of my weak will.
Anyway, Jacob did not know now how much the meaning of the words, “Thou art my bones and flesh!” would make me cry.
2. Jacob's marriage (verses 15-35)
(1) Set the wages! (verse 15)
After spending a month tending the sheep at my uncle's house, my uncle calls for Jacob and asks. “No matter how much you and I are bone and flesh, how can we make work with balls? So set your wages!” At first glance, it sounds plausible and gentle, but in fact, even in these words, Laban's cunning is contained.
There is no law that sets wages for workers. It is always suggested and decided by the user side first. If you really love your nephew, your uncle should have offered you the wages first. You should have made the offer first, a little more than the wage set at the time. In a way, it is a bit vulgar to ask Jacob, who is weak, who has no place to turn to now, to set his wages first.
We must also show some warmth and accuracy in our material life. Sometimes, because of the immorality of material relationships, many people fail to glorify God and hide it. In this case, no matter how much tithing you pay, it is not completely pleasing to God.
(2) Give me Rachel, your uncle's daughter (verses 16-19).
⑶ Laban’s tying (verses 21-30)
A contract with Uncle Aptton was made, and Jacob worked seven years like a few days to get Rachel as his wife.
Seven years have passed and the day of marriage has finally arrived.
However, seven years have passed, but Laban is still silent and Jacob speaks first.
There is something insidious about the silence of those who should speak. Therefore, never trust the person who should be responsible unless he or she speaks! You will surely be disappointed.
“Proverbs 16:30 He who closes his eyes plans rebellion, and he who closes his lips does evil.”
“My uncle, the deadline has now passed. ”
“I have done all I have to pay, so give me your uncle’s younger daughter!”
“I will enter her.”
How patient and how urgent would you have expressed that you would enter Rachel?
Our Lord speaks to us in a similar way.
“Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and sup with him, and he with me.”
Laban throws a banquet and sends Leah into the chamber instead of Rachel.
When Jacob got up in the morning, he found Leah, and he hurriedly went to ask his uncle...
That excuse...
“It is a custom not practiced in this region to marry a younger brother before an older brother.”
“If you endure only 7 days during the feast, I will give you Rachel first, so serve another 7 years.”
Laban, who was very meticulously calculated, thought that Leah was not good in appearance and lacked the eyesight, so she was not good at tending sheep in the fields. That's an amazing calculation.
what is this?
It's just tie-in.
Selling bad things with good things is a bad practice that Laban first started.
In the end, Jacob took Leah and Rachel as wives, and sent their maids Zilpah and Bilhah with them.
In this way, Jacob got two wives, and in the end, he served 14 years to get a wife, and in terms of money, he spent 210 million won to buy a wife.
⑷ Jacob’s love for seven years seemed like a few days (verse 20)
In this way, the contract with my uncle was concluded. But Jacob's love for leaving home and having no one to turn to made the seven years seem like a few days. This is how great love is.
Ex) It may actually be difficult for the world to become difficult to live in, but the truth is that life becomes difficult because there is no love in the world.
Yes) Likewise, the fact that life feels hard in my heart is true, but in fact, it is because love has grown cold in my heart.
1 Corinthians 13:4-1, 7 “Love is patient… bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things! ”
If you love, you will be motivated and refreshed in your faith and life.
Jacob's love for obtaining this Rachel is often compared to Jesus Christ's love for obtaining us as the bride.
In order to make us his bride, the Lord did not hesitate to suffer all the hard work, humiliation, pain, and death. He was glad to carry the cross. Hallelujah!
