Title: Renewed Lord's Command and Jonah's Sermon
Text: Chapter 3
Jonah was given a second mission after being vomited on dry land at the command of the Lord.
Jonah experiences the tribulation of his former disobedience and now obeys the word of the Lord (v. 1)
1, there is a command from the Lord
“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and declare to them what I have commanded you” (verse 2).
For the second time, without rebuke and without criticism, for the previous disobedience of the prophet,
to (v. 1)a get up, b. go to Nineveh, c. d. deliver the command.
Jonah must not speak his own words, but what God has commanded (verse 2).
Jonah is a preacher of the word of God (1 Peter 4:11), not a messenger of his own will.
Whether the proclamation was the same as before (Jon 1:2) is unknown, but Jonah must have known
2, there is Jonah's obedience
“Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, just as the LORD had said (verse 3).
Iseong was Samilgil and it was a great fortress.
Nineveh has a circumference of 480 stadia, and it is three days in a march of 150 stadia in one day.
Thus, the account of the book of Jonah is consistent with the geopolitical assessment.
Jonah 1, Wrote in the city 2, Walk for a day 3, shout 4, After forty days, Nineveh will fall.
prophesied
Some manuscripts say “not forty days, but three days.”
This coincides with the date on which Jonah went around the city.
However, traditionally “forty days” has been adopted
What language did Jonah speak at this time? In order for the Assyrians to hear and understand him, he had to speak the Assyrian dialect.
Scholars believe Jonah spoke Aramaic, the diplomatic language of his time
3, there is a response from the people of Nineveh
“The people of Nineveh believed in God, proclaimed a fast, and were clothed in sackcloth, small and large.”
This was the result of Jonah's declaration
(1) The people of Nineveh believed in God.
(2) Declared fasting
(3) He wore sackcloth = Verse 5
This is an outward expression of the sincere repentance of the people of Nineveh.
They believed in God, not Jehovah.
because they did not know the LORD
Yahweh is the proper name of Israel's god, so they might not know his name
4, there is a king's attitude
“The king rose from his throne and took off his robe and put on sackcloth.”
The words of an unfamiliar Gentile prophet and the reaction of the people were delivered to the king, and the prince took the same stance as the people.
But we don't know who the king is from here.
The king gave a surprising command
(1) Proclamation was made
(2) They were not allowed to eat or drink water with humans, livestock and animals.
The apocryphal book of Judith also contains the contents of this prayer.
(3) Both man and beast were clothed in sackcloth = Verse 8
(4) I cried out to the Lord
Nineveh's sin was moral and social
This is suggested in the evil way and the violence of the hands (v. 8).
There is no mention of idolatry in any form here.
5, there is a king's expectation
‘May God change his mind’
This is not a sure guarantee, but a hope. The king of Nineveh hopes for God's grace in this penitential attitude.
1. He expected that God would turn back, 2. He would cease his wrath 3. He would not destroy them.
These are the conditions that people with a penitential attitude can have.
6, the king's expectations were fulfilled.
“When God saw what they had done, that they had turned from their evil way,”
Their expectations did not turn to disappointment.
(1) God saw that they had turned from their evil ways.
(2) So he changed his will
(3) He canceled the disaster that he was going to bring upon them.
God's grace was given swiftly
This shows that the penitence of sinners is a basic element of receiving God's favor.
God's calamity comes after the time of grace has passed
With the people of Nineveh = v. 5. The king's posture = v. Let us know what the conditions for enjoying God's grace are
