◎ Text summary and background
Jehovah Nissi (Yahweh is my flag) ; The name of the altar that Moses built after the battle and victory over Amalek. It means that the Lord will be a sign to summon his people. This is the story of the victory of the Israelites in the war they fought in the wilderness. The Amalekites came to destroy the Israeli army. Moses speaks to the people and to Joshua. Tomorrow I will go out with the rod of the Lord, so gather the men and fight the Amalekites. Moses saw from the top of the mountain that the Israelites were being pushed by the Amalekites. When Moses raised his hands in prayer and prayed, the Israeli army gradually defeated Amalek, but when Moses' hand went down, Amalek drove the Israeli army. Aaron and Hur, who saw Moses winning when his arms were raised, sat him in the middle, and they stood holding their hands, and modern Israel overcame Amalek. After that, an altar was built there and it was called “Jehovah Nissi.”
1. Moses choosing men to fight against Amalek (17:9)
No one is needed for war. Moses chooses people to go to war. War is not for everyone. Only the elect can go out. However, having courage alone does not mean that you can go out only with strength. When you go to war, you must win. Victory is not unconditional. We can win only when God is with us. This can be achieved when we hold on to God's promises and go out.
2. I will take the staff of God and go out.(9)
It means that we will go out holding on to the staff of God's promise and the staff of miracles. It is not that the staff has power, but that the power of God at work will be with you. Moses grabbed the staff of promise and went to the promised place.
3. Moses with helpers (10)
When Moses went up to the top of the mountain, Aaron and Hur followed him. They didn't go there to see They came together to help Moses. They took Moses' hand. I grabbed Aaron's hand so it wouldn't go down. They held on until Israel was victorious.
