Title: Jesus' sense of humor (July 23)
Contents
This morning I want to share a story that comes from the depths of my heart. What I believe is that Jesus has a very good sense of humor. Jesus felt hungry and tired, and showed anger or weeping. But nowhere in the Bible can we find that he laughed.
There are three reasons for this. First, it is because we are trying to show only the image of Jesus suffering. However, it is necessary to remember that Jesus suffered only one week in the 33 years of his life. Second, we cannot see the body language of Jesus. 80% of humor comes from gestures rather than words, and you can't see Jesus like that. Third, in the process of being translated from Aramaic to Greek, Jesus’ witty words were not accurately expressed (…).
From now on, let's look for interesting things Jesus expressed in the Bible. (1) Jesus said that no one puts new cloths on old clothes. If you wash old clothes after attaching new ones, they will be wrinkled. This is a comic image. (2) He said that alcohol should be put in new bottles. If you put new alcohol in an old bottle, it will ferment and burst, and it will be all over the place, including the top and bottom, carpets, etc. This is also a comic image. (3) The blind leads the blind. There is a blind organist named Claire Fox. One day his wife changed the furniture arrangement, but Fox couldn't adapt to the new furniture arrangement and bumped into it and eventually had to put the furniture back in place. It is absurd to say that the blind lead the blind. (4) The fact that you can't see the beam in your own eyes while looking at the speck in other people's eyes, or that a person who owed 10 million won was forgiven and was working on a person who owed a thousand won on the street, is an exaggeration if you think about it carefully. It is a funny expression.(…)
Also, in some of the teachings of Jesus, we can see the sudden evangelism into ridiculous situations. The first to be last, the criticisms of the Pharisees' prayers, the parable of the Good Samaritan, etc., changed the general situation of people and turned it upside down and brought laughter to the people.(…)
You can also see that Jesus used humor in a different way. Jesus said that a person with deep love is a humorous person. Jesus had great love for the brokenhearted. You've talked a lot about the light and dark side of life, using a variety of humor.(…)
I have a favorite bible verse. Luke 6:21. “Those who mourn now among you will laugh in the kingdom of God.” There is another verse. There is a scene in the Old Testament when Sarah, Abraham's wife, was pregnant. “God has made me laugh, and everyone who is here with me will laugh.”
Humor is a spiritual gift. Humor should be used to build relationships with people, to energize communities, and for good purposes. It is here that we must remember that Jesus used many humorous expressions for the community of faith. Jesus is still our Lord in our love and humor. I hope God's blessings be with you, the church, and the mission. Amen.
