Tips 1. Ripping one's clothes (v. 63): an expression of extreme anger or sadness.
2. Lower Courtyard (v. 66): The courtyard of a house (see v. 54). The house of Caiaphas, where Jesus was tried (v. 53), was part of a large palace with several courtyards. Another disciple (probably John) was acquainted with the high priest, and he was allowed to enter the courtyard with Peter (John 18:15-16).
false testimony
The crowds who arrested Jesus hold a council and question Jesus to find a legal basis for execution. They gave many testimonies, but they did not agree with each other (Deut. 17:6; 19:15). Some people testify falsely about Jesus, saying, “I have heard that it is said that I will destroy this temple built with hands, and in three days I will build another temple not made with hands” (verse 58). But Jesus did not say, “I will destroy this temple, which is made with hands,” but, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” This is what Jesus was talking about, not about Herod's temple, but about Himself (John 2:19-22).
Peter Denies
Peter said that he would never deny the Lord, even to the point of death (verses 29-31). But he denied Jesus three times in public. It is the result of not being awake and praying (verses 37-41). He was always ready to run away (verses 50, 54, 68) and was afraid (verses 66-68). However, before judging Peter, we must first examine our lives to see how many times we have denied Jesus and how many times we have been insensitive to the Lord's words because of a lack of prayer.
