Matthew 10:34-39 ‘34. Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the world, not peace, but a sword, 35. I have come to bring a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, 36. The enemy of man of his own household, 37. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me, 38. And he who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.' - Amen.
Although the date of Christmas is not certain, December 25th, which was randomly created by a Catholic theologian, has become a festival of people at the same time as the end of the year. Fortunately, we are trying to reflect on the meaning of Christmas by using it as an opportunity to love and care for our neighbors in the cold weather. What is the Biblical Meaning of Christmas? We are trying to understand the meaning of Christmas in advance by realizing once again the words of the Lord that we have come to bring a sword, not peace.
1. Jesus came to judge the world
People know that Jesus came to save the world, so you shouldn't say negative things. But historically, Jesus came to make people know that they are sinners and to warn them that if they believe, they will be saved, and if they do not believe, they will die in their sins and be judged. The gospel is said to be good news. But for those who have not accepted the gospel, it is not good news but cursed news. in that sense
Today's text, Matthew 10:34 "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the world; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword."
The first shepherds who kept their sheep heard the news that Jesus had come to this earth from an angel. At that time, Luke 2:13-14 ‘13. Suddenly, a multitude of heavenly hosts together with the angels sang praises to God, saying, 14. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom God is pleased.' It means peace to the people who are freed from it and find joy.
When Jesus showed a man who was blind from birth on the Sabbath, these are the words of the Pharisees when they came out and criticized him for working on the Sabbath with illegal legalism.
John 9:39 "Jesus said to them, "For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind."
The historical purpose of Jesus' coming into the world is not simply to be celebrated as a festival, but it is also a day to declare a severe judgment that if you disbelieve you will go to hell. Therefore, it is really ignorant thoughts to enjoy Christmas without believing.
2. You came for a love that transcends the bond of flesh and blood.
During the Christmas season, we do a lot of caring for our neighbors in need. Not just Christianity, but many other organizations. Did our Jesus come into this world to love our neighbor, but to feed and clothe us? It's not like that. It is incidental.
Matthew 10:37 “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and anyone who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Do you celebrate the birth of Jesus? It won't. Therefore, it must be said that you do not properly understand the meaning of Christmas.
3. He came for eternal life
Jesus did not come as a good guide as an extension of our lives. Christianity does not seek to deny culture and history, but rather has a goal of lasting life in the other world after the end of the culture of this world.
Matthew 10:39 “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
The word life means all of life. Although Jesus came for our sins and we have received eternal life through the resurrection of Jesus, it is ignoring God's tremendous blessings of salvation to still hang on to the life of the world and the life of the world. So it means that such people will lose the life of eternal life.
Mark 10:29-30 ‘29. Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, anyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel will receive a hundredfold in this life, houses and brothers and sisters and mother and children and lands There is no one who cannot receive both persecution and eternal life in the age to come.”
As we enter the Christmas season today, we realize what Jesus Himself was telling us about the purpose of His coming into the world. The purpose of the Lord’s coming is not for the festivals that these people drink and enjoy, but for the life of precious people, and to those who hear and welcome the news of joy and peace, to those who do not hear and disbelieve, the fact that Jesus came with the sword of wrath and tribulation. you will find out
Christmas doesn't have any meaning in the date, but in what kind of turning point Christmas brings to your life. Believe that the true joy of Christmas will be with those who receive the Lord as my Christ, and I hope that you and I will be able to properly communicate that the Lord is the Christ even in this winter.
