Jesus in trouble / John 12:20-28
Palm Sunday is the day Jesus went up to Jerusalem to carry the cross.
In John 12, Mary anointed Jesus with perfume and
When he entered the city of Jerusalem, people glorified him by praising Hosanna, Son of David.
Now, for the third time, in the text of the text, He speaks of being glorified and being glorified.
It is strange to people to think that he was glorified in front of his death on the cross.
Jesus wanted to be glorified through his death and resurrection.
However, he confesses that Jesus' humanity has a heart of embarrassment because of this.
Therefore, he shows that the way of the cross is difficult to bear and tells us that we must overcome it.
1. Jesus to be glorified
1) Greeks came to see Jesus.
a. At that time, some Greeks who had converted to Judaism came to Philip and asked to see Jesus.
It came to Jesus because he longed for the grace of salvation.
b. Philip was fluent in Greek or had lived with Greeks, so they came.
c. Philip spoke to Andrew, and they started talking to Jesus together.
Andrew played the role of leading many people to Jesus.
In this way, Jesus allowed his disciples to make good use of certain qualities they had.
2). Jesus said, "The hour has come when the Son of Man will be glorified." said
a. When he saw the disciples bringing the Greeks, he knew that they were seeking the grace of salvation.
He knew that they would be glorified in their coming.
b. So Jesus said that the time had come when He would be glorified through His death and resurrection on the cross.
c. And not only was Jesus glorified in his death and resurrection on the cross, but
Because it can bestow the grace of salvation.
3) Jesus spoke of the law of glory, that is, the law of life.
a. “Truly, truly, I say to you, a grain of wheat falls to the ground.
Unless it dies, it remains as a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit."
b. Jesus is speaking of a sacrificial death, that only the death of the cross can be glorified.
Of course, life in the world comes only through death, but eternal life is not
He is saying that it can only be obtained through the death of the cross.
2. Saints to be glorified
1) Jesus says that if a man loves his life, he will lose it.
a. Man tries to die for his own life.
b. But the more a man strives for himself, the more wrong he becomes.
This is because people are in the pit of sin, and the more they move, the more they fall into it.
c. So the more you love your life, the more you lose it.
2) Jesus says that if a person hates his life in this world, he will preserve it for eternal life.
a. Jesus is telling people to know that they are in the place of sin and death.
b. Jesus is the way man can overcome sin and death,
He says that you must believe in Jesus Christ to be saved.
c. Only those who have been forgiven and saved through Jesus
He is saying that life will be preserved for eternity.
3) Jesus says that we have to follow Him in order to serve Him in a way to receive eternal life and glory.
a. Jesus said, "If anyone wants to serve me, follow me."
b. Jesus said, “Where I am, there will be those who serve me.”
Those who follow to serve Jesus will enter the kingdom of God where Jesus will ascend to heaven.
He says that we will be together, that we will have eternal life.
c. Jesus said, “If anyone serves me, my Father will honor him.”
He says that those who follow to serve will be glorified because God the Father is honoring them.
3. Jesus Is Embarrassed
1) Even after pouring perfume and singing Hosanna hymns, Jesus was embarrassed by putting the cross in front of him.
a. The reason why Jesus was embarrassed is because John 12:33 “He said this by what kind of death he had
He showed us that he was going to die." As the saying goes, the sinless person took the form of a sinner and
Because he knew that he would die on the cross.
b. There are other instances where Jesus was embarrassed.
John 11:33 "When Jesus saw him weeping and the weeping of the Jews who had come with him,
He felt sorry for him and was grieved." - Jesus was angry and sorry.
John 13:21 "When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit and testified, saying, I
Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
Jesus suffered and groaned.
Hebrews 5:7 "While he was in the flesh, he cried with bitter cries and tears to him who was able to save him from death.
supplications and wishes were made, and they were heard because of his reverence."
Jesus was in agony and mourning.
c. What Jesus was embarrassed about was God who faced death on the cross, but as a human being
It was because of the confusion you were experiencing.
The confusion in which the eternal life tasted death, the confusion in which the innocent bear the burden of sin;
Confusion, where those who should be worshiped by men are betrayed, despised, and ridiculed;
Because of him, the fear of death, the pain of the burden of sin, the wrath of betrayal, and the groaning came to Jesus.
It was a process I had to go through as a ransom. Because he has suffered all the suffering that a human being has to go through.
you were disappointed
2) Jesus prayed, “Father, save me and get me out of this time.”
Matthew 26:39 “Going a little farther, and with his face to the ground, he fell on his face and prayed, saying, My father, if
If it is possible, let this cup pass from me.” How embarrassed must he have prayed like this?
3) But Jesus wanted to take up the cross to glorify the Father.
a. Jesus said, "But for this I have come at this time."
Jesus overcame the mind of the flesh and thought of what he had to do to take up the cross.
We, too, must realize that we live to take up our cross.
b. Jesus said, "Father, glorify your name."
Jesus knew that there was nothing that could glorify God except to carry the cross.
He knew and wanted to carry the cross.
We too must know that bearing the cross glorifies the name of God.
c. God said, "I have glorified it and will glorify it again."
God was glorified by what Jesus had done until now, and also through his atoning death
What God said you would receive.
Jesus' life and death were solely for the glory of God.
Therefore, the life and death of the saints must be for the glory of God only.
conclusion)
Jesus put the cross in front of him and anointed him with perfume,
While receiving praise from people,
Even when people came to receive grace, he was embarrassed.
The suffering to be suffered as a human being was truly unbearable.
But for the will of God the Father, the work of glorifying God the Father,
Knowing that he must die, he gave up his embarrassment and went to the cross with strength.
He went to the cross because Jesus had to die in order for God to be glorified and to save people.
He taught and set an example for us to have glory when we die and to gain life.
And he taught us that we must serve and follow Jesus so that we can be with Jesus and that God is precious to us. Therefore, let us also follow Jesus and carry our cross to Golgotha. Only then can you be with Jesus, glorify God, and lead others to the path of salvation. I pray in the name of the Lord that you will become saints who can follow Jesus and glorify Him because they live a life of carrying the cross that cannot be borne by the fleshly thoughts.
