Title: Jesus the Temple
Contents
The content of the text is John 2:13-22
Jesus valued the temple very much. He compared the temple to the flesh of Jesus (verse 21) and also called the Father's house (verse 16). According to the biblical basis for the temple,
(1) Patriarchal Age: Wherever Abraham went, he built an altar to the Lord (Genesis 12), and built an altar on a mountain in Moriah where Abraham sacrificed his son Isaac, born at the age of 100 (Genesis 22), and Jacob built an altar to Beersheba (Genesis 22). On the way from Esau to Haran, he slept at night and saw the angel of God ascending and descending on the ladder that reached the sky (Genesis 28). Jacob said, “This is the house of God and the gate of heaven” (Genesis 28:17), anointed him with oil and named him Bethel (Rus).
(2) Age of Exodus: During the 40 years of living in the wilderness, the tabernacle was built in the wilderness (Exodus 25-27), and priests were established (Exodus 28-31).
(3) Age of Canaan: After the Age of Judges, the Age of Kings (Saul → David) 2 Samuel 7:1-3 “David expressed his heart to build the house of the Lord” Verse 13 “Your son (Solomon) built a house for my name. 1 Kings 5:5) 1 Kings 6:1 “In the 480 years (966 BC) after the Exodus from Egypt (1446 BC), and in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign (962 BC), Solomon built the temple for the Lord. 1 Kings 6:38 “Solomon built the temple in seven years” The official name is Jerusalem Temple, but it was called Solomon's Temple (960 BC).
①Solomon's temple was so splendid that it was adorned with the finest cedar wood and gold (1 Kings 6:20-22). However, when the children of Israel worshiped four gods and turned away from God, they were divided into “Northern Israel and Southern Judah”. It was destroyed, and gold, silver and weapons in the temple were plundered. Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed 375 years after it was built.
② The Zerubbabel Temple was rebuilt over 20 years from 536 BC to 516 BC with the help of the prophets Zerubbabel, Haggai, and Zechariah, who returned to their homeland after 50 years of captivity. It was the shape of the temple. It is not certain how long the temple existed.
③ Herod's Temple is a temple built by Herod from 19 BC to 46 AD until AD 27. That is why the temple at the time of Jesus was called Herod's Temple. Herod, who was appointed by the Roman Empire, was an Edomite descendant of Esau, and had been continuously repairing the temple in Jerusalem for 46 years in order to appease the people's feelings when they ruled over the Jews. However, as Jesus prophesied, in 70 AD, Roman general Titus said, “Not one stone shall be left on a stone”, and today, even the foundation of the temple cannot be found. Mark 13:2)
Then it goes from temple to church. Matthew 16:18 “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” As prophesied, the church begins to expand with the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Originally, the word “church” meant “εκκλησια”, a group of people called out, called, and consecrated, that is, people (saints). A building or meeting place where members of the church gather for worship is called a chapel or church. The early church placed the meaning of the church (Ephesians 12:28) on the side of the worshiping saints (Acts 12:5) rather than the building of the chapel. Later, in the flow of Christian history, the meaning of the church is used to refer to the building rather than the saints. (1 Corinthians 11:18) Ephesians 1:23 “The church is his body” Ephesians 5:23 “Christ is the head of the church”
I hope you have a special love for the Church. Therefore, we must love Jesus, love the saints, love ourselves, and love all the furnishings of the church. I bless you in the name of the Lord that you will be blessed and praised by loving the church, the body of Jesus.
