Title [2009] Jesus Who Gives His Name

Contents

The text is from John 16:23-27

Names are very important. Therefore, God named the first man Adam, who was made in the image of the Lord God, who created the heavens and the earth, and gave Adam names for all the beasts of the field and the birds of the air (Genesis 2:19 ). He made things, objects, and people take the place of people.

Such a God also has a name. (Genesis 4:26) God said, “My name is Jehovah” in Exod. 6:3. In the original language, “Yahweh” is “Yahweh,” but his name was too precious and precious to be called, so instead of Yahweh, he called “El, Elohim, Adonai (Lord).” It is as if a child does not call their father or mother by name, but “Father, mother.” Also, when I was going to write God's word on papyrus or parchment, which became the paper of the Bible, if I wrote the name of God "Yahweh" while I was writing, I put down the pen I was using and took a new pen, so I respected God's name.

Why did people honor God's name?

Exodus 20:7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain” Leviticus 18:21 “You shall not profane the name of God” The name of God is different from what is commonly called in the world. His name is a holy name (Psalm 30:4), a name to be remembered (Exodus 20:24), a great name (Joshua 7:9), a high name (2 Samuel 7:26), a glorious name ( 1 Chronicles 29:13), praise It is a name that will be permanent (2 Samuel 22:50), an eternal name (Psalm 72:17), and a good and beautiful name (Psalm 135:3). 1 Kings 8:18 “It is good that you have this heart, for you have a heart to build a temple for my name,” David was greatly blessed.

God also honored his name.

Genesis 12:2 He said, “I will make your name great to Abraham.” He changed Abraham's name and gave him a blessing. (Genesis 17:5) God is also very interested in his name. In Genesis 32:28, he said to Jacob, Abraham's grandson, that you no longer call your name Jacob, but Israel. He gave 12 sons to Jacob's descendants, and made them the heads of the 12 tribes, and when they migrated from Canaan to Egypt, The number of 70 people increased to 600,000 men in 430 years, and after 40 years in the wilderness, they settled in the land of Canaan. I did. After 3000 years, Israel has not changed. In Korea and China, the names of countries have changed a lot, and the names of huge empires have been kept in the background of history, but the name of Israel has not changed even once since the founding of the country. Because the name Israel is the name God gave Jacob.

The name means that person. There is an old saying about how important a name is. There is an old saying, “When a tiger dies, it leaves its skin, and when a person dies, it leaves its name.” The Lord whom we confess as Savior also has a name. "Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!" It is a name that can be called even if it is called, a name that cannot be erased even if called forever, a name that stays with you even after the years pass, and a name that saved me, a sinner. The name we call the most, and the most familiar and venerated name is Jesus.

The name Jesus is the first name given by an angel. (Matthew 1:21) When a person is born, without exception, everyone names them. Grandfather, father, neighbor, and nominee give you names. However, the name Jesus was not given by anyone. It is a name given by an angel. As an angel is a servant of God and a being who carries out God's errands, “Calling Jesus” should be seen as conveying the name given by God.

Second, the name Jesus is the name of God the Father (John 17:11). The name Jesus is not a name given by anyone, but the name of the Father given by Heavenly Father.

Third, the name Jesus is a new name ordained by God (Isaiah 62:2). Jesus gave us such a precious name. It was given to him to become a spiritual victor, to overcome the forces of darkness, and to exalt his name.

The reason he gave the name is (1) He gave us to pray in that name. (verses 23, 24, 26) The name and prayer are mentioned three times. (2) He gave that name to cast out demons. (Mark 16:17) Luke 10:17 “The seventy returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons are subject to your name.” (3) He gave the name to heal the sick. (Mark 16:18, James 5:14) Acts 4:9-10 “This sick man is made well and stands before you in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.” (4) He gave him to preach by exalting his name. (Acts) 4:18-19) When the priests, temple officers, and Sadducees forbade preaching in the name of Jesus, Peter and John said, “Judge whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God .”

Dear brothers and sisters, Jesus gave life, gave his name, and gave everything. What can we give the Lord? I bless you in the name of the Lord that you will live a life that is pleasing to the Lord.
