Title: Lessons from Jesus / John 7:14-18

Jesus went up to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles, kept the feast quietly, and then began to teach in Jerusalem about halfway through the feast. Today, we are going to consider some characteristics of Jesus' teaching through the text.

The setting is a scene [teaching] in the outer courtyard of the temple, chronologically, on the fourth day of the month of Tabernacles, where pious Jews and rabbis gathered to discuss various religious topics.

It is not known in detail what he taught at this time, but this was also a very controversial and shocking statement for the Jews.

1. The Jewish Reaction to the Lord's Word

1) The Jews marveled, saying,

When Jesus gave a lesson, the first reaction of the Jews was [wonder].

The Lord's precepts are very authoritative, and when he taught the truth, their reaction was [strange]. They do not take the teachings of Jesus Christ as they are, but show that they care about outward matters.

2) How does this man know how to write, since he was not educated?

At that time, most of the Jews spoke a dialect called [Aramaic] and the Bible was in [Hebrew], so it was difficult for those who did not learn professionally from the rabbis to have a well-rounded knowledge of the Bible, and only religious leaders spoke Hebrew. i thought i could read Therefore, although the teachings of Jesus are true, he is a Galilean and has never learned from anyone, nor has he formally studied under a rabbi.

This can also be found in the attitude the Jews took toward the disciples in Acts 4:13.

Acts 4:13 When they saw Peter and John speaking without question, they were originally ignorant criminals.

I knew it, but I was amazed, and I knew that he had been with Jesus before.

At that time, there were famous teachers like Gamaliel and Hirel, and in order to become a rabbi, it was not only common to study under such teachers, but it is said that he could work as a rabbi only after many years of fellowship with the rabbis.

Therefore, Jesus is showing a figure that goes beyond the common sense of the time. When a young man from a rural area was not only fluent in the Bible, but also testified to the authoritative Word, the Jews could not help but be surprised. However, because there was no purity in their hearts, they were judging the background and origin of Jesus rather than accepting the lesson.

2. Jesus' answer

1) My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.

Jesus humbly introduces his teaching as coming from God on the one hand, and points out that it comes from God as a lesson with divine power on the other hand.

①Following the prophecy of Moses

Deuteronomy 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you among their brethren.

I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them all that I command him.

② Other Bible verses expressing humility and union with God

John 5:30 I can do nothing on my own, but as I hear, I judge; I do not do my own will, but the will of him who sent me, and my judgments are just.

John 8:28 Then Jesus said to them, After you have taken up the Son of Man, you will know that I am

And I did nothing on my own, but just as the Father taught me.

You will know that I say these things

John 12:49 I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me personally commanded what I should say and what I should say.

③ Jesus is emphasizing the truthfulness and truthfulness of the teachings he preaches, while other Jewish rabbis ascribe authority to their predecessors or authoritative rabbis. The words of Jesus are the truth.

④ Examples of other people

Psalm 25:9 He guides the meek in righteousness; He will teach the meek his way.

*Apostle Paul

Gal 1:11 I make it known to you, brethren, that the gospel that I preached was not according to the will of men.

not that

Gal 1:12 I did not receive it from men, nor did I learn it.

It came only through the revelation of Jesus Christ.

* Lessons for us

Even if you read the same words, you must be illuminated by the Holy Spirit. We too need to be illuminated when we read the Bible.

2) He who speaks for himself seeks only his own glory.

① When a person realizes the Way in his own way, he will tell it to the world and boast of his greatness and excellence.

② However, the Lord is not seeking his own glory, he is glorifying God.

③ The apostle Paul also confessed

1 Timothy 1:12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, that

that you have entrusted me with the office

The Pharisees were praised by people and boasted by having many successors, but Paul is rather humble and gives all glory to God.

1 Corinthians 15:9 I am the least of the apostles, and I am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

1 Corinthians 15:10 But it is by the grace of God that I am who I am, and his grace that was given to me was not in vain; I labored more than all the apostles, but it was not I, but by the grace of God who was with me.

④ Can we confess like Paul?

2 Corinthians 4:5 We do not preach ourselves, but the Lord Jesus Christ,

And for the sake of Jesus we preach that we are your servants.

2 Corinthians 4:7 We have this treasure in vessels of earth, so that it may be known that the exceeding greatness of power is in God, and not in us.

3) He who seeks the glory of the one who sent it is true

The Lord is claiming that the image of himself seeking the glory of God, not his own glory, is true. This is a statement raised as an objection to the crowds who are said to be deceitful toward Jesus Christ (verse 12).

These words are naturally connected to people in other places. In other words, those who seek their own glory are not those who seek the glory of God, but are liars.

Philippians 3:7 But whatever things that were useful to me, I counted them all as loss for the sake of Christ.

Philippians 3:8 And I count all things as loss, because the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord is the noblest; for for his sake I lost everything, and counted as dung I gained Christ.

Philippians 3:9 to be found in him; my righteousness is not from the law

but through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God through faith

4) There is no unrighteousness in him.

The word [unrighteousness] is used only once in the Gospel of John, and is the opposite of [faithful, reliable]. That is, the Lord Himself who is sent from God to preach the word of God and seek the glory of God is true, and there is no injustice in it.

**** conclusion  ****

1. Criteria for evaluation

It is not measured by educational background, family, or other external standards, but by actual standards.

society should be

2. Let's live according to God's will, not our will

Jesus did not do it voluntarily, but according to the will of God.

3. The true picture of our life

① Let's honor Jesus Christ

Philippians 1:20 According to my earnest expectations and hopes, I am not ashamed of anything

But now, as before, I have full courage, whether I live or die, Christ in my body

Do you want to be honored?
