1 Kings 17:17-24 Let my soul return Topic: 16. Power.7 2007. 9. 2.
◎ Introduction
: Elijah's first miracle, God's miraculous care in the midst of severe famine caused by drought
An unfortunate incident occurred to Elijah and the widow of Zarephath, who were wearing them.
※ The widow's son fell ill and died. But this event was for God to show His power through His servant.
1. The son of the widow of Zarephath dies. (17-18)
2. Elijah raises the widow's son. (19-24)
1. The son of the widow of Zarephath dies. (17-18)
One). “After this”
※ Elijah's first ministry was that it would not rain on Israel for many years as God's judgment on Israel.
※ While it was not raining in Israel, God led Elijah to the brook Cherith to feed him through ravens, and also led him to Zarephath in the land of Sidon to receive the empty widow's chest.
2) “He was out of breath”
※ The widow of Zarephath, who was saved from starvation by God's special grace, unexpectedly fell ill and died. (17)
※ One day, he suddenly fell ill and died. The reason is because Elijah, who was with him, died without even having time to pray for him or to heal him...
3) “Remind me of my sins”
※ Seeing that her son is dead, the widow considers it a punishment from God and blames Elijah.
※ As Elijah lived with him, his sin as a Gentile was exposed, and he thought that his son suddenly died as a result.
4) “Did you come to me to kill my son?”
※ The widow, who was desperate in the face of the death of her son, who was more precious than her own life, did not know that she was living in a famine by the power of God
Without thinking, he blames Elijah, the man of God.
2. Elijah raises the widow's son. (19-24)
1) “Give me a son”
※ Elijah's words to the widow who complained of resentment toward herself and the sadness and despair of losing her son was to “give me a son.” (19)
2) Elijah goes to his place of residence, lays down on his bed, and prays to God.
① I asked for an answer to my prayer.
* “O Lord my God” confessed that he completely depended on God.
② He prayed for the end of the disaster that had come upon the house he was living in.
* “I brought calamity upon the widow of the house where I was living” Because God caused the widow's son to die, he confesses that he is the only one who can raise the child.
③ I asked him to bring the child back to life.
* “Let the child’s soul return to the child’s body” Elijah will know that God is sure that God will answer his request.
* He prayed for no rain in Israel for three and a half years and received an answer, so he was sure that he would spare the widow's son.
※ Note: As Elijah prayed, he fell on his face three times on the child's body and prayed.
* It is not known what it means in detail, but it shows his earnest desire for the child to survive.
3) Elijah's earnest request was immediately answered. (22-24)
※ For this reason, he proved to the widow that only the Lord, the God of Israel, is the truth.
※ I learned that Elijah was a true prophet of God. (24)
※ Whether serving Baal as a foreign woman, she will not only provide daily bread in the midst of drought, but also turn death into life.
He came to know that the only one who changes is the true God.
※ “Behold, your son is alive” What could be more joyful for a widow?
* In the same way, God is pleased with the day when one of us is revived (saved). This is the gospel.
