body description

The text introduces five phenomena that occurred when Jesus died on the cross.

Today, I will focus on three phenomena.

1. Darkness has come (verse 33).

Jesus was crucified at 3 o'clock (9 o'clock) Jewish time, and he suffered by hanging on the cross until 6 o'clock (noon).

At this time the people and the members of the Sanhedrin bitterly mocked and criticized Jesus.

At six o'clock (noon), suddenly the whole land began to go dark, and the darkness continued until the ninth (3 o'clock).

The coming of darkness over the whole earth can be understood in two ways.

First, in the Bible, the phenomenon of the entire earth turning into darkness often symbolizes judgment and curses.

Ex) One of the ten plagues of Egypt (Exodus 10:21) / Amos 8:9-10

Second, the darkness that came to all the earth from 6 o'clock shows the painful heart of God looking at the suffering Jesus.

This pain was like the agony when Abraham slaughtered his only son Isaac and offered it to the altar.

The sun could not shine on the figure of Jesus who was hung on the cross for mankind and hid its light.

This can be seen as symbolically showing the painful heart of God and all things looking at the suffering Jesus.

2. It is a desperate cry. (Verses 34-36)

Mark recorded only one of the seven words of Jesus on the cross.

This cry is a fulfillment of the prophecy of (Psalm 22:1).

The psalm is astonishingly vivid and vivid as it is to see Jesus' death (taunting, piercing hands and feet, casting lots of clothes).

This is because the poet was moved by the Holy Spirit to write the poem.

3. The veil of the sanctuary was torn (verse 38).

This incident first tells us that the Old Testament sacrificial system was no longer needed (Mark 13:2).

Second, with the death of Jesus, it means that the barrier between God and man was removed.

In the Old Testament times, the veil was covered so that only the high priest could approach God.

But through the death of Jesus, anyone can come to God in that name.

(Heb 6:19-20, 9:6-14, 10:19-22)

The veil covering the Holy of Holies is no longer necessary.

Therefore, after Jesus died, God used angels to tear the veil of the Most Holy.

It is a difficult week.

Meditate on the death of Jesus on the cross and send thanks and praise for the amazing grace that saved us from our sins.

The centurion, who carried out the crucifixion, said after seeing Jesus die

"Truly This Man Was the Son of God"

I hope that those who do not believe in our piety through the Holy Week will be able to see and say these things.

“The members of the Malacca Korean Church are different no matter what! After all, people who believe in Jesus are different!”
